If Cotto beats Margarito and they both put in A- performances, Cotto is p4p No. 3...

I fail to see what positive Margarito can bring to Cotto in terms of P4P ranking: Cotto is widely considered a top 10 whereas Margarito could only claim a precarious status in the top 40.

Conversely, Cotto's current ranking may drop significantly should he lose to Margarito.

hey my bad. I misread the thread. I thought you meant if Cotto beats Margarito like Pacquiao beat David Diaz. But I already expect Cotto to beat Margarito so he will not necessarily consider him better than Calzaghe and JMM if he wins. I am not too keen on the whole A+ A A- B+ B+- A>C C+ C- Z rankings system. i think its been taken so far that now its just stupid.

I will change Cotto's rank based on my opinion of his performance after the fight and Margo's based on his. Simple as that.

How does a guy with a bad defence, fighting best at the mid-range and only being able to press forward present Cotto with the style that would give him most trouble?

If anything Margarito is in trouble when Cotto jabs in and smothers his punches, not to mention presents him with a precise, very hard offense that can land at will?

Cotto has the stylistic advantage, Margarito cannot fight backing up and is open to everything in Cotto's offensive arsenal, not to mention being a horrible inside fighting technition, working best at the mid range, where as Cotto is a textbook inside fighter with the best body punching in the sport, the body is Margarito's weak spot.;)

i think cotto is being overrated a little, gomez although coming down in weight was never favoured to beat him, and was chosen for cotto to win, and he won a VERY CLOSE RAZOR THIN fight with mosley - mosley is old (not saying he's shot or past it) but not close to his prime. i actually had it a draw with more inclination for a win for mosley. anyway, like how pavlik is top 5/4 in some p4p lists (how??????????) i just think cotto is getting a little too much credit for wins which although impressive - when actually looked into in depth, probably not as impressive as you'd really like.

just my two cents, cotto hasnt done that much, he's a 2 weight undefeated champion, but there's not many big proven names (in their prime - before people mention mosley) he's faced.

joe is a 10 year, 2 weight undefeated champion - undisputed in 1, considered the best in another, and he's fought some big names well past prime, and still won convingly - and can be argued was disadvantaged in quite a few of those big name/fights. (lacy had the power, the rep, and the age, kessler the age again - sure joe had home advantage, hopkins was beat in his own backyard, and at joe's lhw debut)...

i think people are far too kneejerk on moving p4p lists about... both pac and calzaghe have proven themselves over time - a long period of time, cotto and pavlik are a bit too raw and new in what they're achieving (im speaking relatively in cotto's case - i know he was 140 champion as well, but for the first 80% of fights his resume wasnt particularly great to shout about.)

Corrales was ranked #5 p4p when he fought Floyd, Floyd was ranked #7. Corrales was also the favorite, was undefeated, and was knocking people out left and right. If Margo was undefeated, ranked ahead of Cotto in the p4p rankings, and favored to win the fight(right now Cotto is about a 2/1 favorite), then it would do alot in terms of boosting his p4p status. However, given that Margo is not a highly skilled fighters who has already struggled/lost to B level fighters, I don't think Cotto beating him will help him out much. Once again, he's a 2/1 favorite.

Cotto is an A+ level fighter. As is Pac, Mayweather and Calzaghe at this point. They are the best fighters in the sport.

I fully expect an A level performance from Cotto, nothing less.

Margarito is an A- level fighter IMO. A tougher opponent than David Diaz, and slightly tougher than Hopkins at this point in his career. If Cotto can dominate him, he will be my p4p no.2.

Pac will stay based on his consitently great performances.

To Decebal, who asked why JMM is not number 2 for his fight with Pac. having a good fight against a great fighter, isn't enough to earn a p4p spot. More than anything, it showed how well stylistically he matched up to Pac. I have JMM high, but not that high.

His difficult fight with Chris John, and his close fight with an old Barerra bring him down slightly in that regard. Especially considering how much more convincing Pac was vs Barrera.

    lol.

Pacman's era is almost done. He needs to man up and fight Juan Manuel Marquez again, because that is most defiently unfinished business.

He will, just give it time.. Arum is already talking about a second rematch with JMM in early 2009.. Pacquiao will fight JMM again before he retires.. Patience is a virtue :thumbsup

Do u really think that will happen? :nono

I got cotto at #3 right now, but don't see him moving up to 2 unless he absolutely shuts out margo, or JC loses to RJJ.

Can someone list the strengths and weaknesses of Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito? It would help to see what we should expect on July 26th.
