The #1 spot became Cotto's since Floyd retired. Cotto took the #2 spot after beating Mosley. Margarito is 4th to 6th at best, behind Cotto, Mosley and Williams for sure and, to some observers, not far in front of Judah and Quintana or behind.

Cotto beating Margarito just confirms his #1 status, nothing more.

Cotto/Mosley II or Cotto/Williams would be more significant matchups.

Cotto is already #1 and if he beats Margo, then there is no doubt.. Williams & Clottey are the only ones I see to needs to beat to fully clean out the division..

With the exit of Floyd from the scene . . . he is already the number one at 147. There's no other fighter in the division who has a better resume than this guy. He has already fought and beaten Mosley, Zab Judah and Carlos Quintana who are all inside the top ten list.

If he beats Margarito . . . fighting Williams and Berto next would be a clean sweep for him.

I think you are underrating Margarito. He was lazy and demotivated against Williams, just like Williams was against Quintana first time round. If they fought again the fight would go like the last round of their first fight, Margarito would be too tough, too strong, and would stop Williams. He would most definitely beat Mosley, who, like Hopkins and DLH, is good enough to test the younger guys now but not good enough to beat them.

The rankings just now should read...

    1 Cotto, 2 Williams, 3 Margarito, 4 Mosley, 5 Clottey/Judah

So Cotto will consolidate his no 1 status if he beats Margarito, if Margarito wins he should switch places with Cotto. The winner should fight Williams and the winner of that fight should call out Mayweather and get him back for a superfight!

    If Cotto beats Margarito . . . a Williams/Cotto would be awesome.

Forget Floyd . . . nobody should call him out now . . . because if somebody does . . . he'll have reason's to brag and dictate his purse again.

If he wants to come back . . . it should be on his own willful act otherwise . . . let him stay into retirement.

Lazy and demotivated? More like slow and confused, which speaks better for Margarito. If a boxer is "lazy" and "demotivated", then he shouldn't be boxing at all.

Zero value, not a fact, just speculation.

How can you put Margo and Williams in front of Mosley? Mosley lost a close one against the #1 Cotto, close enough to put him in the 2nd spot. Williams is tied 1-1 against Quintana who btw shows nowhere in your top 5. Margarito has only his pair of wins against Cintron and a somewhat unimpressive win against Clottey to show. His resume, in other words, sucks.

Cotto is already #1 at WW and has been since moving up to that weight, PBF never fought the BEST at that weight...

Reply for Ziggy Montana (I have only just joined and don't know how to properly do that extracting and responding to each individual part you did):

I do believe Margarito was lazy against Williams, just like Williams was against Quintana. Look what happened in the last round when Margarito realized he was behind? Whether or not that is the right attitude doesn't matter, fighters are often lazy and demotivated. You think the top guys can get motivated and excited for mandatory defences? The reality is they don't always. Did you see Calzaghe v Sakio Bika? There's plenty of examples of this.

I value my own opinion that Margarito would beat Williams and Mosley.

And what the hell has Mosley done to deserve even the number 4 ranking at welterweight? The only thing he has done in the past 6 years in that division is get whupped twice by Vernon Forrest, beat two nobodies in David Estrada and Jose Luis Cruz, beat Collazo and lose to Cotto. Is his 147 resume better than Margarito over these last 6 years? No, it ain't.

The fights against Forrest date back 2002, those have no incidence on today's rankings.

The reference match is the one Mosley fought against Cotto, which is a better achievement, in spite of the very close loss, than beating Cintron twice.

Laziness is no excuse for poor performance. I used to say that Margo is a big, tough fighter with very good stamina yet slow, flatfooted and somewhat clumsy defensively. Now, thanks to you, I can add that he's "sometimes lazy".

So is that your sole reason for believing Mosley should be ranked #2 then, that he lost to #1? Brilliant, get me a fight against Miguel Cotto and I'll be ranked #2 as well then. I notice you didn't disagree that Margarito has a better record in the welterweight division than Mosley, so I guess that settles that.

Laziness may be no excuse, but in reality it was the reason he lost. You may not like it or find it acceptable, but it's true. Margarito is a better fighter than Williams, or Mosley in Mosley's present state. I think he'll surprise a lot of people against Cotto, though I'm not confident enough to say he'll win. But a highly motivated Margarito is some force at 147.
