If Cotto beats Margarito, would you consider him THE welterweight champion?

    With the welterweight championship vacant, would you consider Cotto the true champion at 147 if he defeats Margarito? I don't care about Ring rankings and policy, just your personal opinion.

    No.

    The title is vacant. Cotto is the top contender, but the #2 contender is Paul Williams now. Margarito is the #4.

    Sure, why not? They are probably two of the three best fighters in the division. I think whoever wins this would obviously be seen as the best in the division...

    jaja ofcourse, now that the ***** is gone all these floyd **** jockeys dont have **** to talk about since he retired and left the real fighting to real warriors.

    No. The winner between Cotto-Margarito doesn't have more of a claim than say, Paul Williams.

    I view the fight next month as a championship bout.

    Floyd didn't make a legitimate WW championship defense, going up for ODLH and then fighting a 140-pounder without the credentials to warrant a title shot ahead of Cotto and others.

    With an unblemished resume that includes wins over Quintana and Margarito, along with Mosley and Judah, his resume is impeccable. Williams should be the No. 1 contender now, but I don't view it as necessary to go through him in order to be champ.

    If Margarito wins, he'll have beaten the No. 1 at 147 by far, and his resume compares favorably with that of Williams. PW owns a close decision over him, but PW also has lost since then while Margarito has not, and two KO victories over Cintron and a wide decision over Clottey make him stack up with Paul pretty well. A Cotto victory should make him champ with Williams as his No. 1 contender as well.

    You can make a valid counterargument for sure, though.

    The situation is different at, say, 175. I don't believe either Calzaghe nor Dawson can be champ until those two sides are reconciled in some way. You might argue that Tarver should be in the mix as well, but I view him as a top contender along with Johnson. Erdei is a joke and doesn't count.
