If Cotto beats Margarito, would you consider him THE welterweight champion?

How can Cotto be THE champ when their are 3 other guys with belts? How can he become THE champ by beating a guy that another titleholder in the division already beat? Cotto is A champion at 147. He's probably also the best champion. However, he's not THE champ.

for me Cotto is the chemp since he beat Mosley Floyd has been doing nothing Cotto alerady beat the number one contender Mosley, and the number three at that time Quintana and now is figthing the number 4 contender, Williams is ranked 2 or 3 maybe now but a week ago he was ranked about 4 or 5. That always happpes maybe another fighter upset another higthly ranked fighter and then Cotto is not the chapion he need to fight this other guy never a guy is a champio now days.

 

Cotto's been doing the best work lately, but vacancies are usually filled by #1 fighting #2.

What makes Margarito a higher ranked contender over say, Williams, who beat Margarito?

Forget Tito. Spinks had all 3 major belts, then Spinks lost to Judah, Judah lost to Baldo, and Baldo lost to Mayweather.

 

Moved up to Junior Middleweight right after the DLH victory, had a title fight then unified against Vargas. He also moved up to Middleweight after that in hope to unify and the rest is history.
