If Cotto beats Margarito, would you consider him THE welterweight champion?

Then stop posting in this thread. That would be a simple solution to your problem.

Who gives a ****? Does anyone gives a **** about Mayweather right now? He is "gone" his belt is in the phantom zone and it doesn't mean ****. The belt doesn't make the fighter, the fighter makes the belt!

This is exactly whats wrong with boxing today, You got a ****er who is playing the sport of boxing milking his "lineal belt" without being a real factor in the 147lb activity. You could have a fighter wipe out the division without even carrying the belts, who would I respect more?......dee de deeee:nut

What if some scrubs fight for that vacated belt without having any resume to even compare to the other 147lbers, They're the "Champ"?...****ing fake ass fans of boxing some of you are.

He went up to 154.

Mosley-DLH was considered a fight for the vacant title.

I am technical about this stuff because there are some rules in the sport. Rules that you can't break simply because you like a particular boxer.

The title is vacant. Cotto must beat the highest ranked contender (which obviously isn't Margo, because Williams beat him) or unify.

Considering Mayweather doesnt fight Welterweights I think its quite valid to say he gave up being the 10 and a half stone champion a while back.

Has absolutely nothing do do with Cotto! In my eyes, who ever cleans the division out the most is the "champ" regardless of what ABC belt he has.

If we're playing that game then why doesn't Williams fight the RubberMatch with Quintana a man he is 1-1 with, who was also slaughtered by Cotto. In the end it makes no difference because Cotto's 147lb opposition > everyone else in the division If he takes out Marg.

This has happened in the past before. There's a difference between a guy being the linear/recognized champ (which is what the thread is about, right?), and who is doing the best work in the division.

Floyd Patterson/Sonny Liston in the late 50s/early 60s before they fought

Michael Spinks/Mike Tyson from 1986 to June 1988 before they fought.

    Jack Dempsey/any HW from 1923 to 1926.

Vacancies have generally always been filled by #1 vs #2. What makes Margarito the #2 contender?

Cotto's the clear leader of the pack, but why should beating Margarito mean he fills the vacancy for the title?

No. The new Champ must be decided by unifying or a fight between the highest ranked contenders.

Two guys that don't have any resume can't fight for it.

What people "consider" was never made official or else Margarito would've been considered #1 long ago, right?
It's based on facts and accomplishments, whether impressive to people or not they're still based on that. Vitali got endless support after his loss to Lewis, don't see how it changed the result.
