If Cotto can't be Trout, why does he think he can beat Martinez @ 160?

Strange, it's like bizarro world theses days on esb how do you compare trout's fight with what may unfold vs Martinez they are nothing alike and they are both no bigger than margarito and most likely less durable. Styles make fights and Martinez even with his size advantage will not press the issue he also is not the fighter that cuts off the ring. If you truly scrutinize his alter ego would be a more explosive version of Carlos Quintana which is the sort of fighter that eats plenty of hard jabs from a fighter like cotto because there's a heavy focus of fast twitch muscle usage something that Martinez may be losing at this stage in his career. This a a close fight and a winnable one for cotto though you'd naturally have to give Martinez the edge for obvious reasons. Again I'm surprised by the polarized opinions on this forum....years ago the quality and insight seemed to be much more detailed, logical and the posters a bit more knowledgable when discussing the nuances of the fight game. Oh well when in Rome.....

Because Martinez looked shot to **** against Murray. Trout is slicker that Martinez, it was a terrible matchup for Cotto. As of right now, an ageing Sergio is here to be hit and knockdowned. If Cotto can still put the trigger and Martinez hasn't improved from the physical condition he showed against Murray, we could be in for an upset.

I think we can also agree that this fight will also depend more on what kind if game plan cotto will bring to the ring. Martinez is consistent with his execution while cotto has shown wrinkles in his, some for the better some for the worse. If cotto decides to box and test his chess abilities ala PAC and trout he will most likely lose, if he applies constructive pressure while cutting off the ring ala Chavez (only at a higher level when compared to Chavez's predictable follow till he's tired tactic) then he will find success no doubt about it.

True, we don't know how they will show up, but we know that:

1- Martinez is a proper middleweight, with a huge reach, comparable to a light heavyweight one.

2- Cotto is really short for a middleweight, and at middle he doesn't have stamina and a reach under the average.

3 - Martinez's stamina is insane, it's not a case that he was a cyclist until his 20s.

4- Martinez's skills, determination, bravado and willness are enough to make him demolish a light heavyweight opponent in the ring (not a very skilled one, but still); he's not called "maravilla" for nothing.

5- he's still the middleweight linear champion, unlike Cotto that has never been a good, let alone great, middleweight.

6- The chin. Martinez took light heavy's blows for 12 rounds, without being even wobbled. Only tireness made him vulnerable. No middleweight ever seriously hurt him, ever. Cotto will have difficulties to even land clean, a knock out is totally out of the question.

So, all we have makes to think that it will be a demolition job, a one sided match in favour of the Maravilla, for faded he may be. Cotto took the fight only for the payday.
Respect to him, hes a brave warrior, but he never had business at middle.

There isn't much between them in weight, they started out at similar weights and will probably be similar in the ring.

Yes Martinez is longer, quick and has good movement but I think that is countered somewhat by the fact that Martinez keeps his hands low and Cotto is not slow himself, has good timing and is a good boxer and smart, skillful pressure fighter who cuts off the ring well.

Martinez can be tagged and has been floored by slower, less skilled fighters.

Cotto gave Mayweather a good fight and landed on him and Floyd is faster than Martinez, has a better defense and similar reach.

Cotto is quicker and a better boxer than the guys Martinez has been facing.

Sergio is favourite but Cotto is a live underdog.

Trout in his prime Martinez not and coming off a injury. Trout got a good jab, martinez does not. there are not the same fighter at all. Trout has defense, Martinez does not.

Martinez is faster and punchers harder but with his "always hands down stance" liable to get the crap beat out of him in front of 20k Ricans.

    Cotto by KO :hi::hi:

Mayweather, and hes top 5 in defense ever.

Who has Martinez fought with Cotto's skill set? Chavez? Pavilk? macklin? Martinez best be ready. size doesnt win fights, skills do, Other wise Chavez should've beat martinez then
