:think Don't agree with that challenging Sergio is a calculated move because of his layoff, age and injuries. If Cotto wins the lineal title it will continue its journey of non middleweights fighting for it with Cotto going after Canelo or Floyd. Interestingly Golovkin and Geale are RING rated #1 and #2 right now after Sturm's loss and if Sergio wins and retires or looks for another non MW payday never defending it before retiring you could make a case for July 26th establishing a new claim.

 

I will be rooting for Martinez because if Cotto wins its only because he cought an injury ridden , past it Martinez at the end of his career.

Roach anD cOTTO probably had inside information about Sergio because Sergio of only a few years a go would be bang out Cotto horribly , and no sane man would sign himself up for that.

i don't think Cotto would fight GGG.most logical opponent would be Canelo.remember,boxing is business and Cotto vs Canelo for MW title would make **** loads of money.Cotto vs GGG borderline PPV event.Cotto would definetly fight GGG if it make sense money wise.

It would be a remarkable achievement, but I won't be able personally give Cotto credibility as the legitimate MW lineal titlist unless he can beat one of the other 160 be ltholders.

Without a single fight at the 160lb limit and with the possibility that Maravilla is simply shot at 39 years of age and with genuine MW contenders (Golovkin most especially) unfought and waiting in the wings, I just can't acknowledge Cotto as the lineal champ. Can't or won't at least.

Would anyone argue that Cotto beats Golovkin? Hell, I could even see Quillin beating Cotto, though mainly due the Kid's size advantage - perhaps Sam Soliman then?

Cotto would be lineal based on Hopkins winning the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles, he then got beat by Taylor - Pavlik and now Martinez is the champ of the division.

Those titles weren't lost in the ring they were stripped or given up for various reasons but if you follow it back to Hopkins winning all the titles, there isn't much argument to say Martinez isn't the true champ.

 

Now you see how good Roberto Duran was coming from 130, losing to Wilfred Benitez at 154 but as Benitez was taken out of there in Monaco by Davey Moore, Roberto busted up Moore to win the WBA 154 pounds title and then when Tommy lost his WBC MW vacant Championship title won against Roldan to Barkley, the same Duran won the MW Championship from Iran The Blade Barkley...

 

Yeah it would, i'd be dead chuffed for him.
Not that I want to see Maravilla lose; I like both these fighters.

If he Cotto wins and the knee plays no part, then Cotto is elevated considerably.
