His former sparring partner George Godfrey(if Dempsey's management had the balls to give him a shot).......

I have numerous newspaper articles and boxing historians opinions of Gene Tunney and Harry Wills both ducking George Godfrey.. ..and dempsey certainly did not seem eager at all to meet godfrey in his comeback in 1926-27 according to the papers.... Anyone want to see them?

If Jack Gives Godfrey a shot in 1928, Godfrey the # 2 rated heavyweight contender knocks dempsey out. If not Godfrey, Schmeling takes him in 1930 or sharkey defintley takes him in a rematch.

I dont think Dempsey at this point, even if he got in the best shape of his life would have beating Tunney. No amout of training will bring the legs back, which Dempsey of couse has lost.

OVer all, I give Sharkey a shot in a rematch or Schmeling a good shot in taking out a over the hill Jack Dempsey.

Amazing how much disrespect a old timer powerful skilled superheavyweight like George Godfrey gets, yet Vitali Klitschko gets his nuts licked by this forum

Vitali leaves a bad taste in me mouth:verysad

I'm not a big Klit fan, perhaps if they changed sexes, and their name started with a C? I'm still searching for ways people would find accomodating regarding both

Given how much Dempsey struggled Vs Sharkey, and considering the dubious circumstances of his victory, I'd have to give Sharkey a great chance of dethroning Dempsey.

BTW SuzieQ, I'd appreciate the newsreads.

Wills avoided Godfrey, but Tunney did not. Can you produce the news clip that says Tunney is ducking Godfrey?

I have read it the other way around.

i've read Godfrey was avoided by some white fighters. apparently he had a similar punch to a george foreman!

if he was so good then how did he get sparked twice by langofrd in under 2 rounds?

Wills declined to fight Tunney when he had the chance but at this poin wills was 37 years old, but Godfrey challenged Gene over and over again to no avail.

Being beaten by Langford is indicative of being a bad fighter?

Godfrey is like a book with a great looking cover, but when you finish reading it, you think less of it than you initially thought or hopped.

2nd tier white fighters such as Renault, Risko and Gross beat him. I think Dempsey caps him the same as Langford did, and Tunney out points him.

I have read that Godfrey had no intrest in fighting Tunney. He was also the worst low blow puncher of all time. Even worse than Golota
