...What would have happened to the sport throughout its history?

Their records and styles inside the ring remain unchanged.

(Note that this wouldn't necessarily be all positive or negative. On one hand, boxing would be the only sport in existence whose athletes are universally bitter, critical of their contemporaries, and hate the press. On the other hand, they would all engage in surprisingly sound financial planning...)

They use to say that someone who was extremely frugal or watched his money carefully had the first dollar he ever earned. Rocky Marciano was famously frugal, but seemed to hide his money in various places rather than invest it wisely or putting it in the bank. Larry Holmes seemed to be very frugal in addition to putting his money in the bank or investing it wisely.

If you're trying to say that Larry Holmes had a very large *****, you're correct. Very correct.

Larry was a little bitter during his career. He was also too honest at times. Overall he was a good guy. He has done a great job holding onto and taknig care of himself financially.

He was getting ripped off by Don King just like everybody else but he eventually got some separation from King. Not to say he never had to do buisnes with him but Holmes did more than Okay.

A little bitter?? That's like saying Danny Devito is a little height challenged.:yep

But seriously, I never understood Holmes' bitterness, especially towards other fighters. He always acted like it took something away from him personally to give respect to his opponents or even possible opponents; and in later years, good luck getting Holmes to say anything nice about modern fighters (especially the heavyweights). He always came off (and still does) as a bitter, jealous man. I mean, he's a multi-millionaire and a very respected former world champion, and he still acts like he's this giant victim.
Great fighter he was, but a little lacking in the class/brains department.

Not every fighter had to beat up an old Ali, and the business side of boxing can leave almost every fighter bitter (and broke) even if you're great.

I just watched Holmes against ocassio. It was a mismatch but Ossie had just beat Jimmy Young out of a title shot. The crowed would only cheer each time Ossie landed anything and he was hit at a ratio of 10-1.

It had to be the frustration of knowing he was the best heavyweight in the world, not getting the credit for it, everyone wanting to see him lose and compare him to a washed up Ali that made Larry so bitter. Each time he won the opponent was slated...yet a lot wound up winning titles Afterwards.
