Floyd had his first JWW fight a few months before Cotto even won his vacant WBO title against Kelson Pinto. Floyd would have his last fight at JWW just 13 months later. In that time, Cotto defended the vacant WBO against Randall Bailey, Chop Chop (who had just lost to Floyd at JWW), and Muhammad Abdullaev.

By the time Cotto went up to WW Floyd had signed to fight Oscar in the biggest money fight in boxing history, at JMW.

Either way Cotto himself and everyone involved confirmed in the build up to their 2012 fight that he had been offered a fight with Mayweather for early 2006 but that "I (Cotto) wasn't ready for him then. I am ready for him now."

    Sooooo, yeah...

but at 140 Floyd would have been prime too and Cotto got KD a few times at 140 so it might have ended worse

At the time (circa '05/'06), Cotto wasn't ready by any means for that version of Mayweather. Mayweather would have put a serious beating on him. Cotto came into his own leading into the first Margarita fight.

By the time the two did actually fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr. had slipped a bit (age+those mini-retirements add up). Plus, 2012 Cotto's punch resistance was greatly improved, partly as a result of his moving up in weight.

That fight was not close. Mayweather dominated and had Cotto holding on for dear life in the 12th round.

you can tell the level of boxing fan you are dealing with when this is brought up

the answer is cotto and arum didnt want any part of cotto fighting floyd....and they admitted it....but a relatively green cotto that had troubles with torres and even paulie would have been slaughtered....and i like cotto alot...

when cotto was ringside for the gatti battering they were like "yeahh ummm nahhh"

people that bring this up are still the ones who belive floyd ducked shane and margarito....morons

Yeah the look on Cotto's face as he sat ring side for that fight was classic. Hatton also sat ring side for that fight. But yeah Arum said Cotto was too green for PBF back then.
