The point is that Mayweather would never fight the way Cotto did (i.e. fighting back as much as Cotto did). Mayweather would be way more defensive, likely run all fight (more than he did in the Baldomir fight) and really try to avoid getting hit at all cost, which would likely make him look like he quit if he lost that way.
The difference was that Cotto actually fought Margarito back but in the end he came up short and ended up getting knocked out morally, mentally, and physically.

They may have been more quick to call Floyd a quitter stemming from the two different fighting approaches. For example, Floyd was 24-0 when he fought Corrales who at the time was 33-0, right? People know that Cotto wouldn't have danced around a considerably slower (in comparison to both fighters) Corrales like Mayweather did. I think that's one of the reasons, or one of the primary reasons, peeps are so disapointed in the result of last Saturday night. Cotto had never rilly fought like that before, and if you remember correctly, didn't start off that way against Margo-but realized very quickly that he had to. Hey, I'm not on this site to make enemies or ruffle feathers, so I'm gonna try and abstain from posting reply to threads like this until I watch the fight again on Saturday night. I'm just tryin' to help everyone understand what rilly happened that night. Goddamn, It just occured to me that I've never went to bat like this for one I've never considered a favorite or one I've always been rather indifferent about. I think that serves to speak volumes.

Good post. There are certainly different levels of quitting(although I don't consider retireing quitting.) There's what Cotto did(no shame in his actions, he was taking a beating), There's what Morales did(kind of suspect, but he was giving it his all and realized he was in over his head), and then there is what Duran did(his actions were dissapointing)

Not callin' anyone a liar or anything close, but I was there and didn't see a towel. I swear it. Maybe with all the surrounding noise and craziness I was sidetracked. I don't know? What I seen was Cotto go down to a knee once Margo was back up on him. If a towel was thrown, it was done most reluctantly so. Had a towel been thrown in with conviction from the corner, it would've met the center of the canvas. But again, let me watch the fight again on Saturday night and be as reasonable as possible about this. Thanks for reading and helpin' me think more about this.

    good post,

It is about time people in this forum grow up. Before the fight I had the first 5 rounds going exactly as they did but i thought margarito would have been softened up a bit and cotto would have stopped him late.........

like a know it all....I was telling my friends all week thats how it would go......

but thats the really beauty of boxing there is hardly ever a sure thing

and the final outcome was IMO .........will overcoming skill,

and by that I must add...........I dont think Cottos a Quiter hell no!!!!!!!! as someone already posted, everyone boxer has a breaking point and cotto WAS broken

after the fight was stopped I was mildly pissed off for approx 10 seconds, then my feelings changed to "WOW !! what a fight"

If you wanna be technical about it sure, he quit.

But this was a man who was on his way out. He had done everything he possibly could do and took one hell of a beating before calling it a day.

I find it incredibly selfish that you expect him to accept a beating until he's unconscious. Especially considering Margarito isn't a one punch knockout artist. Every punch is solid meaning by that 11th round Cotto had been pummeled badly. That is the kind of beating that is very hard to overcome later.

And Mayweather doesn't get criticized if he gets in and goes to battle with a guy like Margarito. He gets criticized because he never took the fight with Margarito. Big, big difference there.

Cotto took the knee before towel was thrown in! so he did quit on his own will. Even Jim Lampley says it.
