I've been watching old Patterson fights on ESPN for the past couple hours and he looks like a 175 version of Shane Mosley. He had blinding handspeed, great movement, tremendous flurries with arm punches that actually had sting on them, and a left hook with bad intentions. I know heavyweight was where the money was those days, but he had no business in there with a guy the size of Sonny Liston. How do you think he would stack up against a Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson?

He would clean up at 175 today nobody would beat him out of the current guys especially with the day before weigh in he could make the weight for majority of his career.

Putting the curent light heavyweights up against him would be cruelty to children.

As long as we're playing with this idea, just who beats Patterson at 175?

Foster and Langford and that's it? He'd be Hell on wheels.

Patterson as Mosley is an interesting one.

I dunno. Foster is a horrible puncher. Horrible puncher v busy swarmer...if you're taking a quick look it's an easy pick. I mean I say to you, Horrible puncher v busy swarmer, who do you pick?, you're going to say, "horrible puncher". Or actually, you make this post:

    And I'd go

    And you'd go:

    And i'd go

But at the very least, it deserves a second look. What do you think, Patterson crowds foster and is able to KO him?

His chin would hold up a lot better at this weight because he wouldn't face the kind of power he did at Heavyweight.

Floyd would rule the roost at LH today, none of the current group would have a chance aginst Floyds power speed and boxing ability.

    Ezzard Charles.

He'd have to avoid getting hit, but he was the only man to ever go 15 with Marciano and he went the distance with a still potent Joe Louis.

I think Patterson is not unlike Dawson actually: high handspeed, fluid combinations, good hook, but questionable jaw. Most of todays lightheavyweights weigh around 185-190lbs in the ring, so his chin problems would not vanish, but at least he wouldn't fight guys like Liston and Ali.

I think Floyd would do quite well in most lightheavyweight eras actually. How would he do today? Given that the top seats of the division are currently occupied by past prime fighters, many of whom came from lower weight classes, its certainly fair to assume that he'd have a very good chance of being the best out there. Both Calzaghe and Hopkins would be a pain in the ass for any fighter regardless of their age, but I think a peak Floyd beats them. Dawson, Tarver and Jones probably would pose much of a problem.

That's the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title.
