I wouldn't have such a high drop-off on the pound-for-pound scale, personally. If he's #7 at heavyweight in spite of being so much smaller than most other champions, I would think he would rank proportionally higher pound-for-pound (though lower overall because of the much broader field). I think Marciano belongs in the top 25, personally. No, I don't have a "lesser" standard, but rather I have an objective standard. Youdon't have a higher standard, but rather you have a double standard. The "0" absolutely should be, unless you want to redefine professional boxing. Since amateur fights are as irrelevant to someone's professional boxing record as chess matches, golf tournaments or belching contests, a loss in an amateur fight cannot "taint" somone's professional boxing record, no matter when it happens. "Undefeated in your professional career" means you never lost a professional boxing match, plain and simple. There are no facets or subjectivities to that title- it is what it is. When you never lost a professional boxing match, you are undefeated and have a perfect "0" on your record. Marciano absolutely, untaintedly never lost a professional boxing match, and thus his "0" is as pure as anyone's.
Like I suggested we have different standards that is fine; sorry if I offended you by clarifying it in such black and white terms. Like I said you can take comfort in having the backing of the masses, I will always be fighting the fight that cannot be won, much like Marciano against Wallace... although that is a lie; Marciano did avenge the Wallace fight all be it celluoid.
Skill wise, Floyd is superior to Rocky (by a good margin). Accomplishment and resume-wise, Floyd has a way to go yet to catch the Rock. But he could! (And Rocky could carry Floyd IN his Jockstrap)
TBooze: I guess you feel that Mike Tyson should have a win added to his pro record due to his most recent exhibition win and your "higher" standards. And maybe wins and losses in sparring should be added to a fighter's pro record as well .... just to keep it pure.
Marciano has a huge padded record. Mayweather has already accomplished more in the amateurs and in the pros. Not even close actually.
Ever heard of Shawn Lane or Allan Holdsworth? Page is not technically good at all. Last time I saw him play live he was AWFUL. That's not what counts to most people because they don't hear how technical things are, they listen for a tune they can hum. I'll have to blow my own trumpet now and tell you that even I am light years ahead of Page. Honestly, though -- Page is MASSIVE. He is not under rated one bit.
Whats wrong with the Rock padded his record in the early going?? The guy had no Atm back ground, and came right out of the army after WWII. Once his team felt he was ready, that is what counts for the Rock's greatness imo. Mostly his rein and cleaning out the divsion is what gives Marciano high points.
Marciano faced, and defeated, some very good black fighters... the best of his day. He never once shunned anybody because of the colour of their skin. In fact, he thought the world of Joe Louis and didn't want to beat him. So if the Marciano detractors in this thread don't like him simply because he was white... do some research and look at what he really thought.
Judah was NOT supposed to be too fast. Nearly everyone I know knew Floyd would beat Judah. Baldomir was NOT supposed to be too nig when he was in fact shorter then FLoyd, and had a shorter reach as well. Baldomir was WIDER, but not a heaver hitter at all copared to other WW's. Gatti too powerful? See above reasoning. DLH? This was a fight hard to really guage, I will admit that much. But DLH had been TOO inactive to be seen as a serious threat. Anyway, he's already an ATG...just where on the totem he sits is the question.
With a resume like that you may be a great in your own time but not in the grand scheme of things. My two cents.
Yeah but Lou didnt say that Ali wore Rocky's ass out...Yeah he was landing a big body shot here and there, but he was getting hammered in between his few landed blows...
:thumbsup :happy although he could and should of fought cotto/margarito to seal his legacy, as he has never cleaned up that division. im still fightin wit myself to call him a true ATG, if he has never dominated his division!especially as he quite obviously is dodging..... and if pacman wins mayweather will fight him, and if he does and wins i`ll call him an true ATG!! of course if he loses ppl will call him overrated, that he fought shot fighters etc, which would be unfair....
