Imagine for a moment that credible records and witnesses from the Mobutu regime come to light proving that Foreman was, in fact, poisoned in the way his autobiography claims. An unlikely possibility, I admit, but roll with it for a minute. We will also assume Ali had nothing to do with it, and was unaware of the poisoning. Where would you rate Ali and Foreman, in light of that revelation?
The same. Foreman lost six fights later, badly, to Jimmy Young. Ali was, well. Ali. After Foreman he went through the motions until the 80’s but was never the same man.
All fighters that lose always make excuses. I do not believe in conspiracy theories, I took care of a lot of patients in a Mental Health Unit who tried to sell their conspiracies to us for their actions. It is best to accept defeat, move on, be better prepared next time. Muhammad Ali was the better man that night, fairy tales are for night time story telling for the little ones.
Max Schmeling once said in an interview, that it always worked well for him to accept things which cannot be changed, then just look ahead and move on. It sounds quite simple, but it's a problem for many people.
I know, had many conversations with my patients while I was conducting Group Therapy Sessions. Denial is a barrier just like excuses.
Ali would take a slight hit for me if this happened, since he loses his best single win against a prime ATG fighter. Might not be enough to move him, though. Foreman improves marginally in the rankings. Maybe a slot or two. The real winner is Jimmy Young. Who now has accomplished something that nobody else did: beating a prime Foreman.
He shaved his head, got rid of his mean snarling dogs, got chubby and became a nice man selling grills on television commercials, later to be seen on HBO, as a commentator admiring Oscar De La Hoya with Jim Lampley.
