    Chuvalo and Liston were both on the sidelines too , neither was invited to participate.

    Thanks. Looking back the only mild surprise was Spencer over Terrell.

    OK klompton, you've got me talking about my hero Floyd again.
    I watched the fight alone that Saturday afternoon and broke a lawn chair against a tree after the decision. You can find a picture in the ring after the decision was announced with a stoic Floyd (unmarked) standing there with Ellis's hands raised, nose broken, eyes closing, in short, a bloody pulpy mess. That being said, with repeated viewings Floyd may have done himself in with that stupid passivity of his. The old axiom says you have to take the fight to the champion to win and that fight had 5-6 rounds of no kind of action that clearly benefits the titleholder. Patterson DID knock Ellis down in the 14th despite Valen's call and I do think that he did enough to win despite my earlier comments.
    I still say that Patterson's effort to win the title for the third time was far more impressive than Ali's 2nd scrap with Spinks. I still think, and many will disagree, that Muhammad 'threw' their initial fight knowing the young punk would give him an immediate rematch ($$$).

    Frazier would've still won, though who would have been the NYSAC champ who knows.

    Patterson v Quarry 1 & 2 and the Ellis fight ;
    First JQ fight, Jeff Walton reported in Boxing Illustrated that most of the fans and press corps had Floyd the winner as did the weekly UK Boxing News. Quarry, however, was awarded his 4 th draw in 28 fights.
    Patterson then toured S/Vietnam hospitals and front line camps while Quarry outpointed Billy Daniels. Their second fight was the first fight ever televised in colour live to the UK. Frazier from ringside made Patterson the winner along with Reuters. Even Jerry's home town fans booed. The Ring & B/Illustrated printed 7 letters between them complaining about the decision with zero agreeing.
    Ellis' win! "Valan's score, makes a mockery of simple mathematics" Colin Hart wrote in The Sun. "It was no more a victory than the Charge of the Light Brigade was" Peter Moss, Daily Mail's comment. These are quotes from UK papers after the fight. Reuters had Patterson a clear winner as had the Swedish press, Boxing News and matchmaker Mickey Duff.
    After this, his 4 th title fight as a referee, Harold Valan had to be protected by 6 policemen as he left the ring. This, same man, had travelled with Ellis and Dundee to Sweden and was the sole arbitrator!
    Add these 3 decisions to the early Maxim "loss" gives reasonable evidence that you had to indeed stop Patterson, to beat him fairly.
    Frazier would have beaten Ellis anyway, but the beating he took and lay off must have softened him up. As to Mathis getting the undeserved shot at Joe, it was based on his 2 amateur wins over Frazier.

    I watched most of these fights a few years ago. Patterson definitely beat Ellis I thought. It would have been interesting to have seen him fight Frazier. Frazier wins I'm sure Floyd might have had some moments.

    My issue with Patterson in some of the fights I watched was his tendency to bounce in front of his opponent without throwing punches. He just waited too much.
