Why should he be remembered any more than Leon Spinks?

I'll remember him for that upset performance, his big personality and as very skilled boxer who could've more had he wished. Despite beating klistchko he'll never be remembered as an atg like him or talked about like him as hes never defended or fought other top fellas in the division.

    Well...
    You remember Leon Spinks.
1978 was 39 years ago now.
    That's not bad going.

And Fury's 25-0 will always be better than whatever Leon ended up with.

fury has 1 good win against a wlad who didn't train hard enough and didn't show up, he bottled the rematch and is too scared to ever fight AJ

The difference would be that Leon's shortcomings were exposed in the rematch with Ali, and then later on with Coetzee and Holmes (he was already on the slide by the time he fought De Leon).

If Fury never fights again, he will go down as one of the biggest enigmas in boxing history, and people will regularly debate what would have happened if he had fought Joshua or rematched Wlad. A lot of boxing discussions are based on What If scenarios rather than what actually did happen, and there is major unfinished business in Fury's career.

Some way well paint him as a flash in the pan, and others will see him as the one that got away. Either way, there will be a certain mythical appeal about a lineal heavyweight champion who never (officially) lost in the ring and left boxing in his prime.

At least Spinks didn't run away from the rematch.

Well, in order to take the rematch he ran from a mandatory against Ken Norton.

Not that any of this affects how history will view Fury.

He'll go down as a man who ended the long Klitschko reign when it was least expected. He'll go down as a man who was destined to be an ATG but never got there due to psychological issues outside of the ring. He may not have reigned for long, but he made one hell of an impact while he was active and for that reason he'll be remembered a very long time.
