How well do you think a motivated and well trained Cooney could have done against the likes of Max Baer, Buddy Baer, Primo Carnera, Max Schmeling, Jack Sharkey, Jim Braddock, etc?? If you don't think he could have been a champion, then what would he have looked like as a contender?

I sure he would hold the title for a year, and lose it the next year.

He was kind of a left hooking version of Baer, but probably a better boxer, though. So he should at least hold the title at some point, maybe even until Louis takes it from him.

I just think he be part of the crowd in regards to title.

Each guy held it a year before Braddock's break of couse.

It would go from Schemling to Cooney To Sharkey to Carnera, to Baer to Braddock, all in about 5 years. I just think Cooney would just be one of the many former champs Louis beat on his way to the top.

It would mainly depend upon what distractions were available to Mr Cooney outside the ring and how firm a hold they take of him.

It would also depend who he got his title shot against and when.

He is not going to get a title shot just for being white in this era (white heavyweights being ten a penny) and he would have to beat a couple of ranked contenders to get it.

The fact that he would have to be put through his paces before getting a title shot might do him a favour. It is posible that the social conditions of the day make him more hungry and more focused, because if he screws up his boxing career it is back to shoveling sh1t.

    All good points,

Cooney would have to strengthen is mental focus. He was too easily discouraged, and that is a bad mental resolve to have during an era such as the 1930's, where virtually no one stayed undefeated for any great length of time. He would suffer early losses like eveybody else did, and weather he chose to learn from them, or be destroyed by them is what would have made the difference.

Outside of that, I think he had the right set of skills and physical tools to go places. He had a great left jab, hook to the body and servicable right. His defense was never very good, but it was mainly the best of skilled technicians such as Holmes and Spinks who were able to land on him. There weren't too many of those during the 30's outside of Louis and Schmeling. Cooney would have been one of the few giants of his day right alongside Primo, Buddy, and Abe. His power was likely comparable to Max Baer's though I'm not going to claim that either hit harder or softer than the other.

If Cooney had fought in Jack Dempseys era he would have been able to buy his cocaine from Harrods.

Well he wouldn't have beaten Joe Louis that's for sure. But I say he'd have fared probably as well as he did. Beat some of the smaller or past-prime fighters. Struggle against the better ones but have a punchers chance and a clear size advantage over most.

I think h'ed beat Carnera, for sure. Baer? Depends which Max shows up, but a resilient one firing on all cylinders will stop Cooney getting his best work done and will take him out late on in the fight.

I do not think Cooney had the mental toughness to be a champion in any era. He was mentally fragile and fell apart as soon as things did not go his way. You have to remember fighters back in the 30's even the Heavyweights fought several times a year. Cooney was also injury prone I don't think his fragile body could hold up to that schedule. Like someone else said he would not be getting title shots just because he was 'white' as white Heavyweights were a dime a dozen in those days he would have had to work for a title shot and I doubt Cooney could handle it.

That era was a tough one. Cooney may have been more serious about the sport and less from outside attractions, women, booze and substance abuse. I think Gerry would make the top 10 but not so sure he would get to a title. Schmeling,Baer, I think are bad match-ups and Primo was not that bad. I do think Cooney had the power if managed correctly (wacko Twins?) to make a place in the top 10
