He is at the top 5 or top 10. Hagler, Hopkins should be above him maybe Monzon. Monzon is a little overlooked because he fought only once in the USA It is difficult to compare him with the old guys like Robinson or La Motta
Hopkins has some good names (Trinidad, Glen Johnson, close fight with Taylor) on his record and also 20 defenses. Hagler beat alot big names in the 80'th until his questionable loss vs Lenoard
I would love to see GGG stick around the middleweight division and say the hell with a Canelo 3rd match. Looking at the current top 10 ranking, I'd love to see him fight Eubank Jr next, then maybe Adames, then close it out with either Andrade or Charlo. If he could walk away from those 3-0 then we can talk about his ATG status anywhere from 5-10 ranking all-time.
Beating Thomas Hearns is a better win than any win GGG has ever had. Imagine thinking Thomas Hearns, a genuine five weight world champion, is a poor defense. SMH.
He was obviously not including Hearns. Overall, Hopkins and Hagler both had plenty of poor defenses and that’s a fact. That’s what happens when you defend a lot; some defenses will be mediocre.
GGG would do better for his legacy to stay at Middleweight and go for undisputed rather than go after the third go with Canelo which as history has shown in the first two attempts he is never going to be allowed the win. GGG has played to Canelos tune for long enough, time to put it behind him and clean up in the middleweight division in fights he is clearly capable of winning, then off into a glorious retirement . A 40 year old going undisputed at middleweight carry’s far more weight than another disputed loss to Canelo .
Andrade has moved up to 168 so I doubt that's an option at 160 anymore. I don't see GGG fighting a fellow Kazakh in Zhanibek Alimkhanuly either.
What multi division champion can Golovkin beat today that would be good enough for you? We already seen him beat Canelo and get screwed. So Crawford?
That's why I put in the word "genuine" in front of Hearns name. Canelo is manufactured with P.E.D.'s, catchweights, rehydration clauses, short camps etc etc. Canelo has also been on the receiving end of some gift score cards long before his ludicrous 114-114 against Mayweather: https://thegruelingtruth.com/boxing/history-bad-judging-canelo-alvarez/ Hearns was legitimate, Canelo is manufactured and even though I and many others know GGG won, his record shows those two fights as a draw and a loss. To answer your initial question of which multi division champion could GGG beat today that would be good enough to equal beating Thomas Hearns you would have to ask yourself which multi division world champion fighting today do you place at Thomas Hearns level or above?
I'm not sure. To me, all he would have to do is beat Charlo and then he becomes THE Middleweight Champion. That would be an incredible feat at 40, especially for someone whose reputation has been built on aggression and kayos.
