If Golovkin's PPV is a success

I'm not denying the fact that Bumlovkin has the attributes to become a PPV draw and commercial success. He knocks out BUMs, STIFFs and TOMATO CANs relatively easy and looks good doing it. That formula worked for years with Tyson and de la Hoya. I just don't think, at 33 about to be 34 years of age, he has enough time and the right marquee opponent available to make him the top draw in the sport. Not gonna happen. Will he make good money selling PPVs against over matched opposition? Sure. Will he ever be the top PPV attraction in the sport? No.

 

Lemieux is a small middleweight. He turned pro at super welter/junior middleweight. He's about the size of Canelo.

Golovkin is taller and heavier. Golovkin fought at 165 in the amateurs 11 years ago. He should be a super middleweight/light heavyweight by now. He's just become adept at cutting weight.

 

So now Tyson and DLH are bums as well ? you really have great respect to the sport , i guess you are one of the "0" worshipers ....

It will be interesting to see how Golovkin does on PPV. He's been hyped for a while now and HBO have been doing the hard sell to try and make him a star and how the fight sells will have ramifications in regards to future opponents.

If it sells between 300-350K I think it will be seen as a success and a good starting point and will lead to further PPV's but it may not be enough to entice the big names to risk fighting Golovkin just yet.

If it sells over 400K then that is a good, solid performance and more than Cotto/Martinez or Canelo/Lara did so this could entice Cotto or Canelo to the negotiating table as a fight between 2 PPV fighters should generate more.

If it sells over 500K I would be surprised and will see opponents clamour for a fight with GGG as such a number just for Lemieux is impressive.

But if it sells below the 200-250K mark this would be seen as a failure and signify Golovkin isn't a PPV level fighter yet and will need big names to justify PPV's in the future.

 

He will be the A-Side against Ward.

 

Can someone explain who exactly all these big names are GGG is supposed to be luring by fighting on PPV?

Just an honest question. As far as name between 154-168 it's only 3 relevant guys Canelo-Cotto(both have said they have no problem facing GGG after their fight), and Mayweather(who is retiring). As far as wins the most relevant wins he can get are the Alvarez-Cotto winner(see above) and Ward(who GGG has basically ducked).


A serious question to the diehard GGG fans what are all these fight's that are supposed to open up.

 

Well that you say GGG "ducked" Ward, when the opposite is true if anything, but noone could have truly ducked because they arent even in the same division killed any credibility you had from the get-go.

Beyond that the 5 fights that would have a much much higher probability of occurring if the PPV is successful are:

1) Canelo, if he wins. Canelo is not the type drop drop a belt to avoid a fight, and most certainly not if the opposing party has many fans himself and actually brings additional money.

2) Unification with winner of Lee-BJS. Especially if Lee comes out on top, but wave mid 7 figures under BJS nose and he might be temped as well. No way would BJS consider fight for HBO WCB type money, he has already said as much.

3) Fight with whomever happens to be Haymon's top 160lber. Since they have the WBA underbelt, they might be temped to try and force a mandatory or at least threaten to. But for a PPV fight, Haymon would cash in/out on someone. So GGG vs Quillin or Jacobs most likely

4) Andre Ward. The persistence of some on this forum who absolutely refuse to let their brains compute the reality of the Ward situation notwithstanding, the bottom line is Ward wants a boatload of cash to fight GGG. Conversely, having worked a lot harder than Ward in recent years building himself and being more popular, GGG does not feel like and will not take a backseat to Ward in negotiations. PPV money can satisfy the demands and egos of both men.

5) James DeGale. Its entirely possible that if GGG gets through the first 3 fights unscathed, and no PPV worthy guys are left at 160. (yes, via having belts for unification fights DL and Lee are PPV B-side, same for whoever the PBC backs as challenger ) In which case it is entirely possible that GGG would face a 168lb titleholder other than Ward prior to facing Ward. With stateside PBC exposure, but a promoter in Hearn is who easier to deal with than Ward there is a high chance it would be DeGale. Plus a Ward showdown would then be a unification showdown, and a PPV mega-fight by that time.

Explaining the negotiation subtleties of that would doubtless go over your head, but K2 approved Ward as an opponent years ago to HBO at 168 and Ward wanted none of it, fought E-rod.

 

Bro when you and your team say everyone within 3 divisions is ducking, then you make excuses when top guys call you out that is ducking. The Ward fight can happen right now and is more PPV worthy then every fight you just named baring the CA-MC winner. A Degale fight can happen right now as well as I'm pretty sure he's said recently he want to welcome GGG to 168.

What do you consider huge fight's? A bout with the Lee-BJS winner would be big just because it's a unification it has nothing to do with opponent(see GGG's next fight), Quillin & Jacobs aren't exactly big fight's there resume isn't much better than Lemieux.

As far as the CA-MC winner they are looking at the biggest best fight's so outside of a Mayweather fight and a bout with each other what makes people think they wouldn't fight GGG.

 

Please just think a little bit about the Ward situation, just think. Its not hard. As your fellow Ward-ite Shockmaster pointed out himself the other day, Ward wants more money than Lemieux to fight GGG. But to get DL the fight had to be PPV to happen.

Roc can offer the type of guarantees required to get both men in the ring together at any time, but have not. The only attempts to make the fight, ever, have been K2. Both by OKing the fight to HBO years ago, and even floating starting points to negotiate from to Roc. Roc is having none of it.

You are trying to say GGG doesnt want the fight because you think Ward wins, but in reality your opinion on who wins the fight has absolutely nothing to do with how and if fights are negotiated. Stop being bitter at GGG because he was busy working while Ward was busy suing.

As for the rest, the way you and many on this forum calculate PPV worthiness is out of touch with commercial reality. Regardless of how you rate their resume for example, if PBC starts really pushing a guy with exposure and hype they will make for a PPV B-side. Just because they wont have Hagler's resume means nothing.

Canelo is far more likely to take the fight than Cotto, Cotto keeps insisting he is a 154lb fighter for a reason. But really its a moot point until and unless he beats Canelo, maybe Cotto will surprise us.

 

The guy is an idiot. Clearly just mad his boy Ward will never, ever, become as much of a hit as GGG has in the short time since he came to America. Ward with his perfect record and gold medal simply does't put azzes in seats. Truth be told, he has become irrelevant over the last few years, which I'm sure only makes Ward fan boys angrier at GGG.

 

I'm not even a Ward fan like that, the biggest fight GGG could realistically make is the SA-MC winner or Ward. Lemieux,Quillin,Jacobs,Sanders aren't exactly popular fighters so acting like any of those fight's is bigger or would sale more is just stupid.
The fact of the matter is when you start talking like your a great fighter saying 3 division are ducking you then makes excuses when top guys call you out that is ducking.

I remember when Ward was going through a contract disputed and they tried to use that as an excuses, but both Ward and his promoter said they'd put any issues to the side to make a GGG fight and they ducked out. Then people have the nerve to bash Cotto because he's yet to fight GGG in all of 2/3 MW fight's. Cotto moved up to faced the Legitimate MW Champ In his 4th division no less, GGG tried to fight Chavez jr. Most fighter get bashed for showing a distinct lack of ***** like that.
