Since Saturday night's Hamburg catastrophe, there has been considerable debate over David Haye's future. Richard Shaefer has said that Haye needs to look to the U.S. to resurrect his career (akin to Amir Khan) and then aim towards the Klitschko's in maybe another three to four fights. Others, including Frank ******, have insisted he should retire. However, to get another title shot would mean Haye stretching considerably past his intended retirement date, and effectively rebuilding his career from scratch, possibly over three years or more (especially with his "activity"!). At this point it looks like he could be in a "lose-lose" situation. There is no way he will go anywhere close to restoring his reputation if he retires, and fighting on will mean that he will have to abandon the career path he set out with Adam Booth years ago. It is with the aforementioned Booth that this post asks it's core question. If David were to carry on, should he retain the services of his friend and trainer? It's funny how seismically opinions can change- just a month ago Booth was being lauded as a genius for the way in which he masterminded George Groves to victory. Now public sentiment seems to blame him as much, if not more, for Haye's performance on Saturday. I think it's important not to get too caught up in the moment and to take a step back and assess things objectively. We need to remember that whatever tactical shortcomings were exposed Saturday, Booth did create a PERFECT gameplan for the Valuev fight and led his charge to the undisputed CW championship. However, I can't help but ask whether, for example, Freddie Roach could have better utilised Haye's speed and power on Saturday night. For all his dominance, Wlad didn't look that brilliant. Haye made him miss regularly and he never once looked like hurting Haye. I think Haye's frustration at the end was borne out of having a defective gameplan and in all honesty he gave a worse account of himself than he could have done. Make no mistake, even in light of Saturday night, Haye is still a class fighter. If he is going to continue, perhaps a spell with Freddie Roach would work wonders for him. I have no doubt that he has the tools to win another world championship, but these tools need to be better utilised. Counter-punching Wlad was never going to work. Freddie has a very successful precedent for turning fast, heavy-handed, but vulnerable fiighters into world class boxers capable of beating the bigger man. There would be no guarantees Haye could still win, but I feel better tactics would have given him a much better chance.
I think your spot on mate, he should fight on and forget his retirement date... as has been said before on here, HW's tend to mature in their 30's so a clean break, a new trainer and some fresh ideas could put Haye back on track after this defeat and he could again be wearing a world strap or 2.
I was thinking the samething. Haye needs a new trainer who will take him to the next level in his career. Haye will be better served if he jabs better.
problem is he is a heavy who relies on being quick and thats the 1st thing to go. His chin held up ok saturday but its not been to reliable - i think he could come back and beat the likes of arreola and fast eddie and co but hes always going to be up against it when he his giving away so much height and reach when he isnt an inside fighter - to be honest he wont be the klits and he might not even get by someone like helenius or povetkin
Noob - Haye and Booth will retire together, that's not a hunch that's a fact Booth has been brilliant with hayes carrear, and it was not his fault that haye lost in Hamburg. The size of Klitchko, his class and the toe were the factors Don't be an idiot, Haye will retire on his 31st birthday with cash in his back pocket, his brains and good looks in tact. Thats all he ever wanted
They call him a tactical genius, I just dont see it. haye couldnt adjust to a sore toe. The gameplan was obvious from the first second and it didnt work.
Booth asked Haye to do something for 3 rounds and Haye could not do it. Booth would not be asking for him to do something that was not in his capablity.... Wlad was able to prevent what ever it was Booth wanted done... What is Booth going to do after boxing?
If Haye was willing to fight on until 35,he could do things yet. Rebuild. Fight some top fighters, go to America and build his name over there. An Arreola or Chambers fight would be a great way to get back in the game.
why would he need to build his name in america? he's selling out stadiums and arenas in europe making 10-15 million GBP's per fight.
you mean when he realized he could fight Haye for a quality payday and dumped his bum of the month date? yeah, so?
