If he wasn't American, would Chad Dawson get more love?

Actually I think the reason for them being the most overhyped is that they represent the U.S. and only the U.S., because even fighters like Ortiz, Vargas, Tapia ect. represent not only the U.S but Mexicans in general as well.

i havent seen much but what i have is a guy who is very safety first no power not much leaps out a good overall guy with a safe winnable but not watchable style

if he were european he would probably take more **** and considered a fraud who beats old men

I'd argue both Mijares and Calderon are more exciting boxers and personalities than Dawson, for one. And secondly, while I'll grant you Calderon to an extent, I wouldn't really call Mijares "popular". I think he's well-known and respected. Popular? Well, if that's your definition of popular, then yeah, a Mexican Dawson might qualify. But I don't believe Mijares was ever really a superstar. To me, that example proves my point. Mexican Dawson would be at or below that level of popularity. IMO.

JMM was always second banana to MAB and Morales for that very reason. He rose to stardom through respect, success, and the subtle tweaking of his style, but he's a hell of a lot more exciting than Dawson and he still never truly broke through until MAB and Morales stopped being competitve.

I have an aversion to right handed southpaws, you just know that left may as well be amputated and thats why he's boring, no chance of a knockout punch. He would still be a huge PPV star if he were British though.

I know this is off topic, but didn't Mijares have a TV show or soap opera he was on? I know he was very popular with the ladies due to non-boxing ventures.

Yea I mean Ottke and Sturm pretty popular in their time with not exciting styles Dawson would be rich. Theyd turn him into an oreo tho only downslide. I guess they really do appreciate the sweet science as much as blood and guts. Which is not a bad thing. America just alittle hard to please.

Should have read "arguably." A point I made a little further down the thread.

Seriously, Adamek, Johnson x 2, Tarver x2 is comparable to Kessler, Lacy, old ass RJJ and B-hop.

Had he been danish, he would have been as popular as Mikkel Kessler is today, and you'd see me trolling the board telling everybody that he isn't boring but slick. I'd make the Bute-stains of today look like amateur-nuthuggers. :D

Calderon isn't more exciting than dawson ... mijares was very popular ... post arce -pre darchinyan ... a big mexican band made a song about him and he was all over television ... he had commercials ... he was in "sabado gigante" (the biggest spanish show) several times ... the guy was big in mexico

You need personality and charisma to get many people to like you. Dawson lacks both...therefore I don't think he'd ever be that big anywhere else.

Hard to say, look at the likes of froch in the uk for example, he cant even get a tv deal over there but id say dawson would get more support than he gets in the states somewhere else though, especially in a country that doesnt have many belt contenders. Dawson just doesnt really excite, wlad is very safety first too but at least he KO's people and gets KO'ed too

It's hard to imagine he could get less love in another country, so probably yes. He has to be one of least popular "HBO" fighters of all time. You can attribute that to his safety first style, lack of personality, or whatever. Dude just doesn't have much of a fan base.
