Tommy may have tried, but I think Hagler would have eventually gotten to him and broken him down..maybe not as spectacularly as he did in the actual fight but it would have been inevitable. I don't think Hearns would have been as clever or as successful as Leonard was in using those same tactics. Not that I think that Leonard won that fight with Hagler..as most it was a draw, but SRL did suceed at not being knocked out, and I don't think Hearns would have been able, even if boxing and moving, to either keep his chin out of harms way, or to resist the temptation to try to land something big on Marvin, which would have played right into the "Marvelous" one's hands and would have been Hearn's undoing. Leonard was at least very disciplined in not getting into any kind of shootout and was clever in the way he moved and in staying out of trouble with Hagler, but I don't feel he did enough to win.

Bob Arum was asked about rematching Hagler with Duran and Hearns on the respective mornings after each bout had taken place. In the case of Duran, he said he'd be "honored" to arrange a return go, but then El Cholo got trashed by Tommy. After Hagler warred with Hearns though, Arum doubted he could viably market a second fight between them given the decisive and brief nature of the battle which had just taken place.

Psychologically, Marv would have had a huge edge after what happened between the two. He took Tommy's best shot and kept on coming. That would have weighed on the mind of Hearns considerably.

This was why Hearns was offered cash incentives vs Schuler. The earlier he ko'd him (if he could at all ) the more money. He wanted an overwhelming Hearns victory. He got it of course.

I think the hearns from 86 has a great chance in a rematch with hagler.
He had filled out properly by the schuler fight.

true and honestly, that was both hagler's shining moment and the night he likely jumped the shark. he'd never be quite the same again

exactly. I think Marvin put out such a great effort in the first fight mentally and physically that he never was the same again. His motivation seemed gone after reaching that plateau. Hearns was his normal self and actually knew he had to box in the rematch. So in reality Hagler was diminished after the first fight and Hearns was not. Also that right Hearns put on Hagler seemed to take a little out of Hagler also. I think he knew maybe he didn't want to get hit with that again. If I had to pick I think Hearns TKO Hagler round 6 on cuts.

I cant see hearns stopping hagler in a rematch.
I think hearns would be quite cautious and box all the way through, with his right hand deployed only to keep hagler honest.

Then he would not have been Tommy Hearns.

Hearns would simply be delaying the inevitable.

Hagler stops him every time. he was too strong for Hearns. He blew him out. Just once let the actual results of a match mean something, instead of saying things like Hagler was actually just out of his mind for that fight like Hearns wasn't. He wasn't the same anyomore ater that because he was in his 30s. What Hagler did is prove that he would blow Herans out, because he was too stong. Hearns wasn't durable enough for Hagler.

Big Hearns fan here: Of all of his fights, the second chance result of what this fight would have come out to, eats at me to this day. Hagler desrves it all that night and he looked great, but at the same time, that did'nt look like a prime Hearns, maybe because of those mishaps with the hand ,legs etc. in the fight, who knows.. I like Leonard, and he was truly among the best, but did tend to fight great fighters when he sensed they were slipping. Because of this, the Hearns Hagler 2 fight never happened, but the names of Leonard Hagler definitely had more appeal.. It would have been great to see a highly motivated Hearns with the revenge factor going,(like with Leonard in the rematch). Strong and powerful (like with Shuler),against the fading Hagler........we can only imagine I guess...:happy
