It is a matter of skill level. Tommy's skill level to outbox Benitez and Hill when both were probably fighting the best in their career, and knocking out Cuevas and Duran in two rounds, was 4 title fights, and 3 title winning performances. Palomino was good, but Tommy would have outclassed him. You are comparing Stracey to Hearns?
Tommy had great fights. Jones really didn't. He had great performances like Toney and Hopkins and to a lesser extent Ruiz, although Ruiz to me was not the win everyone else thinks it was. Tommy had classic knockouts against champions like punchers Cuevas and Duran, and boxing exhibition vs. boxers Hill and Benitez. I think the names which Tommy beat and fought were guys Jones and any fighter in any era would have loved to have fought.
If Wlad had the skills of Finito Lopez? If Butterbean was a 210 mean lean machine? If Lewis was as fast as RJJ? If Frank Bruno was German?
They are interesting questions, although to think about Hearns with an iron chin means he is almost unbeatable. Sort of like Marvin Hagler with the punch of Mugabi. Who could beat him? Punching power is great, but the great fighters always had more.
your being a bit dramatic, I know, IF, IF, If, and your right it sometimes doesn't apply. But in the case of Hearns who was a beautiful Boxer/fighter, this is a valid IF and IF he had that chin he would have been virtually unstoppable and sat Top of the Heap!
Hearns would only have his stamina as a shortcoming if he had an iron chin. He wouldn't have lost to Hagler as that cut was fight ending. He probably wins every fight of his. I still think David Tua with Salvador Sanchez his mind and footwork would be the greatest fighter ever though.
the only reason he had such a great punch because he had long whipping speedy arms, and no neck and back muscles that would of tightened him up.
I think Tommy and Roy are equally as great. I'd have them around around the same margin of my top 40 with at most 5 places separating them. BUT i think Roy is more iconic with him being almost unbeatable at middle and supermiddleweight...he wasn't called superman for nothin. Just like your sweet little juicy ****.
The reason he didn't have an iron chin is partly because he was a 6'1 or 6'2 WW with an epic reach. He had to sacrifice weak beanpole legs to make sure low weights. If he built his legs up to improve his chin he'd probably be a LHW, well he was for a few fights and he carried the weight fine. He then loses his massive reach/height advantages.
