If it was a 12 rounder Holmes would have won, if it went 15 Holmes would have won but Gerry did well for only have gone 8 rds prior to this one but fatigue showed in the 13th round and Gerry faded
No judge would have scored Cooney the winner if wanting to get out of that arena alive. As it was, Moretti and Ford caught hell. (Moretti didn't judge a match for four months after that.) That round 13 knockdown would have given them no choice but to score a 10-8 round for Larry. Gerry could no longer be competitive, and I think the best case scenario has him kissing the floor again in each of the final two rounds, even if he does somehow get to the final bell.
No way, if Witherspoon & Truth Williams couldn't get the decisions they deserved against Holmes, why would Cooney get one he didn't? :huh
:good True Michael Spinks got it because he won fight 1 by a wide margin IMO but Holmes always got the benefit of the doubt and had the edge with the REF's and Judges like Ali
Holmes was winning, plain and simple. I bet $500 on Larry at the time and again a year later on Benitez against Duran. I won both but my betting days ended then and there! The two judges that had it close in the former and the judge that had it only 143-142 Benitez in the latter sealed it for me. **** on Gerry. He fought a really good fight against Larry and proved his #1 ranking IMO. So how does he come out of that? Why not step back in in 6 months and reestablish? He didn't fight for 6 months? 1 year? 1 and a half years? It was two years before he stepped into a ring again and the rest of his career was rollercoaster downhill. Again?....**** on Cooney. He has no one to blame but himself and of course his two managers Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dumber........
Holmes was clearly winning the fight, but I thought Cooney put up a very good effort. I was quite impressed with Cooney in this fight. If it had been someone else other than Holmes that night, Cooney would probably have won the title.
I scored the match a while back and only gave Cooney 4 clear rounds. You could argue Cooney won 5 or 6 rounds, but Holmes to me won more rounds prior to the stoppage. Holmes also had a knockdown 10-8 round, and Cooney was docked points for the low blows. A decision win for Cooney would have been a robbery.
If it went to a decision, the DKP fighter in a cross promoted fight is not going to be the guy getting screwed. That happened to the other corner. And Larry certainly would have second guessed himself for not pressing on the gas pedal in the 2nd round after dropping him with not even his A#1 right hand. It was a chance to end things and Holmes was a finisher.
If Cooney had have lasted the distance and got given the win on the cards,it would have been the most outrageous robbery in boxing history.
Cooney gave a gutsy performance, but he was in no way even the second best heavy in the world. There were one or two others around whom I'd have fancied to beat him.
Agree with the other poster's that Cooney, although valiant, would have lost a decision against Holmes. Larry has always had great stamina and can bring it in the later rounds. Cooney had never been past ten. Would have made for a great rematch though. After the fight, Holmes surprisingly made some complimentary comments about Cooney saying for one thing that the Cooney jab is very effective and underrated. Holmes felt that if Cooney continued fighting the better opposition that Gerry would one day win a title.
