The Glen Johnson that Hopkins beat was greener than grass, though.

Hopkins would still win if they fought again today, but that version of Johnson hadn't even faced journeyman competition, as evidenced by his series of clean losses in the following years when he moved up in class. It wasn't until years after the Hopkins fight that Glen developed into a bona fide world class fighter.

I agree with you...The point I was trying to get at is why does B-hop need to fight Johnson to prove that his resume is better than Roys.

You're right- he doesn't. Up until the last 4 years, Roy was comfortably ahead on my book as far as resume goes, but Hopkins has taken on tougher challenges as of then and significantly cut the gap down. What Glen Johnson or Chad Dawson would add, I don't really know. What Adamek offers, though, is the chance for Hopkins to become a Ring champ in 3 divisions to show he could weight jump effectively following a consistent level of dominance in one weight class. Even though Dawson beat Adamek H2H, I think that if Hopkins could face and beat Adamek, it'd mean more legacy wise for just that reason.

Plus, there's the practical reason of Chad being tied up with Tarver still- the wait involved with him recovering from his hand injury, the fact that the rematch still has to actually happen, combined with at least a 3 month break after the fight means that Chad might only fight once in 2009. With Hopkins ticking clock, it makes more sense to go after the significantly more active and visible Adamek sooner as opposed to possibly waiting a year for a Dawson fight.

Not that you asked for my entire thoughts on it, but I figured it's better to condense it all in one post :thumbsup

Good post...I agree, you hit every point right on the head.:good

No one can take away what Roy has done in the past but as you stated Hopkins is showing dominance in the weight classes he's fought in..Nobody can take that away from what Hopkins has done and he has surpassed Roy IMO.

O'Brien never defended the title and it became moribund. Several claimed the title, including Bob Fitzsimmons and NY "commission" champion, Bob Moha. Jack Dillon became the "man" with his wins over Hugo Kelly, Levinsky , and Moha.

The New York Commission named Jimmy Slattery as Champ following his victory over Lou Scozza in Feb. 1930. Maxie Rosenbloom beat Slattery and was generally recognized as champ by all but the NBA, who named George Nichols in Mar. 1932. Nichols lost to Lou Scozza, and Rosenbloom defeated Scozza in July 1932 for the undisputed title.

Tiger Jack Fox won the NYS version, then lost to Melio Bettina. The NBA then agreed with the NYS Commission that they would recognize the winner of Bettina and Billy Conn as undisputed champion. Conn won.

So why was Hopkins considered the linear light heavy weight champ? (and most people including most of all of the creditable sports writers)

Although Erdei is garbage they chose to ignore DM despite winning 3 of the 4 major belts and later having them stripped.

This isnt a knock on HOPS im just pointing out that the BS Ring belt and it's letting of there champs defend against anyone(even when not in the division)has caused a cluster****.Bypassing all the young contenders and playing musical chairs with that belt hurts it's own cause.

Had Tarver or BHOP given someone else a crack the LHW picture would no doubt look different.

Same **** when Adamek was at LHW.The old timers wouldnt give anyone a shot.

REally, which credible writers they are?

I found just a few Roy's uneducated forum nuthuggers who
claim Roy won liner title at LHW ... by beating exactly who?

Roy was Ring champion, unified belt holders and probably the best at
his time (including DM) but he never was linear or even undisputed.

So nether Tarver, not Hopkins or Calzaghe were linear
... Erdei is linear until somebody beat him in the ring.

Dan Rafeal...many may not like him but he does have very good insight for the sport! Do I need to name you anymore?

So ask Don Rafael who did Jones beat to become linear champion?

Unfortunately EVERY credible boxing website who list the linear champions historically have Erdei as LHW liner champion. The way that some people refer Hopkins to linear is only by mistake because he is definitely Ring champion however they either doesnt distinguish between linear title and ring belt or they using this for their own dirty purposes.

The common misleading word for this is the "true champion" or "man"
- in most cases linear champion and Ring beltholder should be the same person, but because Jones and Michalczewski ducked eachother we have this whole mess.

So when is the linear champion (Erdei) going to fight anyone? Has he even fought in the US? He will possibly be champion when my son graduates HS and even college. Hopkins fighting and beating Adamek will speak volumes. Too many posters mentioning Chad about how he beat Adamek. I believe Adamek is much better now then when he fought Chad. Chad should give Johnson the rematch and take it from there.

Jones is still substantially ahead of Hopkins in the ATG rankings IMO.

IF Bernard were to beat Dawson and then pull a HW title out of somewhere, (neither one very likely), it might change things.

One point to consider. Bernard began the sport quite late in life.

Were he to have had some of the advantages Roy had in his teenage years, who knows how great he could have become.

Actually, I believe RJJ went on some haitus when he did not get the nod for he Gold Medal. He most definitely would have won a title at 154 where he started his pro career.

I would still have Jones higher in ATG list.
