I think Hopkins will look to mug Dawson if he is to win, in an effort to try and break his rhythm, in the hope he gets away from his advantages, by dragging him into his kind of fight. Hopkins allows Dawson to back him up from behind the jab, he might have problems, as Hopkins probably wont be able to move as much as what Pascal did to offset Dawson, and doesn't have the handspeed to get off first on Dawson (like Pascal did)whilst he's waiting. Counter punching will also be difficult because of how quickly Dawson puts his shots together. Dawson needs to pressure him with the jab, cut the ring down, go to the body when he works his way in, run his punches up to the head, but when he puts his punches together, he has to do it with speed, now the problem for Hopkins, is that Dawson does! puts his shots together well when he throws in combination, and they're fast, so any potential counter inbetween his punches, is hard to find, cause you rarely get the transition from offense to defense when someone's throwing that fast in combination. Dawson is also a terrific body puncher.
Excellent points, gooners. Especially the bit highlighted in bold, which is one of the reasons why I think this fight is more difficult than the Pascal one. But, you didn't answer my question . If Hopkins wins impressively, where would you rank it amongst his top wins?
Say, if it's something from a tough, entertaining 12 rounds like Pascal II, and a masterful clinic like Pavlik and Tito.
Id say its a good win on Bernards record. Not better than Pavlik or Tarver but solid. Dawson just lost to Pascal and thats why Hopkins win would be a little bit tainted.
Possibly should be rated equal or maybe even higher than the Pascal win. People are quick to dismiss Dawson after losing to Pascal, fair enough. But in terms of legacy, Dawson was actually a true reigning LHW champion that beat Adamek for the title. History will look kindly at that
:thumbsup Well I think one of the major factors in a fight with Dawson, is that whilst Pascal was probably just as quick, Pascal has no fundamentals, he leaves spots for you to pick him up with counters because of how wide & reckless he is, where as Dawson is a more conventional, fundamental type of fighter, now if he has those fundamentals, AND he has physical advantages in youth & speed, its definitely plausible he could beat Hopkins, only thing I worry about with Dawson, is his mental make up, he can be frustrated imo, or he can switch off momentarily in fights. Oh , I dont know to be honest, tis a good question, gotta be top 3 though. I guess we will only really know when Dawson has retired.
I think if he wins every round and stops him late that will be his greatest win. Dawson has impressive speed and reach and will be up for this one. Pascal is of the same caliber but Pascal has more power better timing and less speed and stamina. If Dawson let's his hands go and keeps it up for 12 he has a very good chance but if he let's it become a thinking game he's screwed because that's a fight he'll never win + Hopkins is very good against south paws.
