Can Hopkins make it his fight though? Kovalev isn't just a plod plod, jab, jab, staight right guy. He throws a lot of punches and throws them in 4 and 5 punch combos.

Lots of guys have got power, what makes a fighter stand out is being able to land that power effectively. Some guys have extrordinary speed, Kovalev gets through by throwing up and down combos with both hands on the move (the second rd KD of Agnew was a nice example).

Am I gonna try to say that Kovalev just walks through BHop? Course not, but stylistically he's a far cry from the Murats, Clouds and Shumenovs of the world - he throws well and with considerable variation with either hand, and whilst the cross or OHR are his most common finishers we saw him fold Agnew up with a body jab following a tricky feint (something he does to cosiderable effect, though it's not often commented upon).

What I'm saying is that Kovalev is a different kind of problem for Hopkins than his last 3 opponent each of whom had already been shown to be vulnerable to a good boxer without great power (Campillo). Will he have the answer to Kovalev? Sadly, I guess, we ain't gonna find out.

 

Of course he's an elite fighter and one of the best in the Division. I know how he fights and that he is very versatile unleashing murderous combos of punches nicely to the body and head. I also have seen that he is very much at ease with his footwork and body. Question the main is if he would find Bernard trapped to work on him. But he's a much better fighter than all of those including Campillo, no need to even have written that down, that comes to any inteligent boxing fan. I also feel that there was a false perception about Bernard Hopkins specially at this stage of his career which is perfectly natural cause he is 49 after all so I am not insulted when people say he is done, he is over the Hill, he would be crushed by this or that individual, he's surely on PEDs, he is with the corrupted system. Listen, we want to see Kovalev-Hopkins or Kovalev-Stevenson, you were the ones who wanted to erase Hopkins from the game and wanted Stevenson-Kovalev on HBO.

Cant say for sure but probably between 35 and 40.

Which is pretty good considering how many great fighters there have been in the sport.

 

No I don't I'm a Calzaghe fan and think his win over Hopkins is legit. He impressed me with the way he made adjustments on a guy like Hopkins who is considered a master boxer. I have no idea why Calzaghe retired he still had plenty left and could have fought at least another year maybe two. Calzaghe is a ATG and would be great in any era he holds a great win over Hopkins but I don't rank him higher on the ATG list.
