If Hrgovic improves his defense and stamina, will he have a chance against Usyk?

Hrgo's defence I think is deceptively good. He looks languid, and is languid, but seems to be able to react quickly enough to lean back or otherwise position his body to take the sting out of blows.

His stamina is dog**** though and would need to improve to beat Usyk over 12 one suspects.

Since early in his career, he has regressed. He has put on weight, is visibly in worse shape and lacks stamina.

He is not as dedicated to boxing as he was as an amateur.

One training camp doesn’t change that.

Looks like the soft opposition and inability for his management to get big fights has killed his motivation. Big US/UK promoters freeze eastern european HWs out of big fights which doesn’t help. Perhaps he has given up on ever getting a title shot?

 

He has be rejected by every single top 10 heavyweight except Zhang, Yoka, Usyk and Fury, meaning he didnt get big fights, and he is coming from Balkan, he will never be celebrated even if he won against Wilder, Fury and Usyk togheter.

On weight, stamina and visual look it doesnt mean anything, does Fury look like champ? He is dedicated, he has been in the gym since January when Ruiz fight fell apart. His camp has been 6 months at least for now, in that time he has called out Zhang rematch and AJ match, having recived nothing he risked his belt against another southpaw that is undefeated. Usyk will be his 3rd one, why would he give up on title shot when he is the next to recive it.

Opponents arent good, but will prepare him. Zhang has outclassed former most hyped up fighter considered number 3 in the world. Zhang cant be k.o. just like McKean cant be k.o. they are strong, tall and heavy fighters.

On the other side "top names" WIlder and AJ fought glass jaw spent 40yo Helenius and everybody gazes in the glory of that silly k.o.

 

What if Hrgovic decides to go Klitchko route and keep Usyk at distance with jab. Usyk will need to step in and risk getting k.o. and if he doesnt he will loose on points. Hrgovic will not go AJ route for sure.

 

No, it wasn't that good what he showed against McKean. Plenty of rabbit punching, he was given unfair victory instead of sanctioning him. But he's Eddie's fighter, so...

 

Hrgovic needs to keep him on distance with jab (10 cm bigger reach of Hrgovic), Usyk cant hurt him withouth stepping in and that will be risky for him. If he goes this route, again ti will be a question of Hrgovic accuracy and like you say his defense, footwork will have to be impecabble.

 

How many round in your opinion has McKean won?

 

He looked half asleep fighting McKean, was constantly backed up and resorted to throwing rabbit punches.

That wasn't the performance of a top 10 HW.

 

The only thing Hrgovic will ever do better than Usyk in is taking more punches

I think Hrgovic would stand a chance..at winning tops 2 rounds

 

Hrgovic look physically weak to me. I think he has peaked and has wasted his best years being idle.

 

I don't see Hrgovic having the type of jab required to do that, while he does have a good lead hand, he doesn't use a traditional jab he prefers to use the lead hand to parry shots, pull his opponents lead hand or guard down or post with it. That might work vs a lot of smaller heavies but Usyk is a southpaw and his lead hand control his even better than Hrgovic's which is why the bigger, rangier Joshua had no success with his jab.

I also don't think Hrgovic has the foot work to make his lead hand count to control range, he movement is even worse than Joshua's, so Usyk will have no problem getting in and out and creating angles. So if Hrgovic does try to keep it long he'll be out boxed just like Joshua was in the first fight.

So Uysk won't need to step in, Hrgovic isn't a back foot fighter, he's naturally inclined to come forward and that's when he's at his most effective. He'll be made to overreach and miss and Usyk will then counter him when he does from the outside.

Hrgovic does have the best weapon to give Usyk problems, which is his right hand, so I do think he might actually give Usyk more problems than Joshua who always telegraphed his right hand. But Usyk is too complete a fighter with far too much agility to allow Hrgovic to keep having success with the right hand as he'll remain off the line to shut down Hrgovic's right hand.
