He's right after August Wilson, in my opinion, and right before Edward Albee.
Neil Simon is overrated. Give me Tony Kushner before Simon. I loved Glengarry Glen Ross, and American Buffalo was nice, but I don't think of Mamet quite that highly. I mean, his screenplays for Wag the Dog, The Verdict, Hannibal, The Winslow Boy, Ronin, and the Edge were alright but not spectacular. I loved The Untouchables but wonder how much of it's greatness is owed to Brian De Palma. I've been meaning to see his Oleanna and Race but I just haven't been in a theater mood lately. Haven't read Wilder.

If I recall correctly, he used to throw rocks at black people and once beat a Korean man so bad that he lost an eye. They say that people change, but how much? I also remember him saying something on a talkshow about how he'd like to punch an SNL guy who made fun of him in his big Jew nose.

For those of us who didn't grow up with silver spoons, our cliques- and even gangs- were aligned racially. This sh*t was normal, and went all ways. The smart ones grow out of it by their late teens. Not condoning but that is life. Folks like to romanticize Liston and Dempsey and Tyson and Graziano and Carbajal or Vargas and all sorts of hoodlums. And guess what, they all did some ugly things.

While I agree, one could also say that a lot of the vision of the LOTR universe can vary because the source material wasn't near completion, and had more than one author as well. Much of the backstory is covered in sources that even say Unfinished Tales because gaps were added, contradictions in his notes, which were the source material for books published after his death. So while I do agree with your point, there is some degree of slack given to one's own vision of a story that was evolving constantly prior to Tolkien's death imo
