I would definitely employ Tony Galento's exercise regimen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8W9ho12uVA
Imagine the press conference between Galento and someone like Tex Cobb. That would be more entertaining than most fights!
Tex Cobb, was the complete 80's version of Tommy Morrison, former toughman, part time actor, hardcore beer drinker, partier etc big country boy/redneck who was born to brawl.. I would have liked to see the press conferences Cobb had with his 2 x rival Mike Dokes, way back in the day, but way back then the pre fight hype wasn't as glorified as it is today..
I can't believe this dude rocked and dropped Joe Louis. Just shows how shaky Louis' chin was. Tyson would easily knock Joe Louis out but I think Tyson is overrated. Wlad Klitschko would destroy any version of Tyson but Wladimir got KO'd by Purrity and Sanders so anything is possible. For sure though Lennox Lewis would knockout all of them.
Tony Galento was a serious fighter, not a clown show. The whole thing about him training on beer and cigars was PR stuff.
I heard him interviewed where he claimed he was a multiple amateur champ of New Jersey at light heavy... It's a claim I've never seen verified. However, it raises two questions...1) Was he a natural light heavy? 2) Whatever became of the fundamentals that one would assume he was taught in the amateurs?
The guy had over 100 pro fights. Even if he knew nothing when he started, he would have picked up a few things along the way. And you don't have over 100 pro fights because you are some clown playing a game. Have you ever heard over Georgie Garcia? 5'9" tall, weighed over 250 pounds because he was just built that way. He was an alternate to the 2004 Olympic boxing team and was 17-1, something like that, as a pro. Some guys are just built that way and being 'body beautiful' has very little to do with your ability to fight or your willingness to do so.
Galento was the David Tua of the 1930s. Short 5'9 but a very strong 235lb, and packed a devastating wallop in his left hook, He carried his power late too. He was a rough tough fighter, dirty, but beat some really good fighters like Lou Nova. He had a great chin too. A big puncher with a granite chin is a dangerous fighter in any era. Tony loved to fight out of that crouch, and surprise people by leaping out of his crouch with that killer left hook. The galento fight is one of Louis finest performances, and a Louis finishing combo was one of his best ever
Yes Galento could have dropped anybody, but if you have an agenda you might dis Louis. He hit like a truck. Yes some folks are not Body Beeautiful & need not be. But Tony ate & drank to great excess that was not PR. He also would not wash sometimes to throw off opponents. Fought very dirty, heckled & then beat up Jackie Gleason at/after his set. Called Ouis at home to harass & anger him. He was not a very nice man.
