If I'm Schaefer/Golden Boy I try to make Alvarez-Martinez at 157

It would be a prime chance to overshadow Chavez and Top Rank, and a loss wouldn't hurt as much since the nearest Mexican rival already got outclassed. Golden Boy might pursue fights against Floyd or Cotto ahead of this, but there's a decent sized reward with this one as well as the opportunity to take away a Top Rank PPV.

Right, Lara has not outclassed a near rival. I understand that Alvarez has been matched weakly, but the fact that Martinez just fought on what's expected to be a successful PPV against Canelo's fellow young Mexican rival changes the cost-benefit calculation IMO.

It's an interesting idea for sure, but might be a better gamble later on. Like if Canelo can get Cotto first and Sergio can win a rematch with Chavez, so both can maximize earnings a bit more.

I understand what you're saying in terms of long-term profit maximization, but I think just in terms of promoter competition it might behoove Golden Boy to lock Martinez in now rather than even giving Top Rank and Chavez the possibility of avenging the loss.

    This

Ok what do they have to gain from putting Canelo in with Martinez?

Martinez would knock Canelo out cold, I mean come on Jose Miguel Cotto had him hurt!

So why risk one of your main cash cows in one big fight when you can keep milking him in several smaller ones?

Like I said, interesting idea, one that makes sense, and one I had not thought of tonight until seeing your thread.

When I think of likely outcomes, that's not one that immediately jumps to mind for me.

The worst case scenario is an early KO loss, but Golden Boy could probably drain Martinez enough so that wouldn't be a possibility. A wide decision loss isn't the end of the world since the nearest rival just suffered the same thing. Martinez is different from the other 154 beltholders/contenders like Lara since he just fought on PPV and largely outclassed another Mexican star.

The dude hasnt fought one decent junior middleweight yet and was hurt not too long ago by Miguel Cotto's older namesake brother

Sergio Martinez on the other hand has fought top fighter time and time again winning either by KO or completely ****ing their face up

Trust me, its the only outcome that springs to mind

Sergio beats him easily. It would look like a refined emmanuel-Cotto(e)

Saul's incredibly flat footedness isn't going to do him any favors against an incredibly fleet footed southpaw who can fence with the jab.

Martinez only means big dollars if you beat him. A young fighter won't sell giant ppv numbers vs Martinez, they'd have to beat Martinez to establish themselves as a legit superstar. Canelo going from the cans he's crushing right now to Martinez would be a ridiculous step up in competition, needs at least one fight vs. a top 15 guy at 154. At this moment, Martinez would beat the living crap out of Canelo for 11 1/2 rounds

Canelo has better boxing skills and Sergio will be cutting weight. Think about it Canelo will be the Mexican avenger if he gets Martinez before a Chavez rematch lol It's mainly floyd the Martinez team wants though especially since Floyd is getting up there in age himself.
