Ive said it before if Joe Calzaghe was American he would already be an all time great.

****, they where all over Pavliks not so long ago.

Mayweather has a terrible personality and is not exactly a toe to toe merchant.

  4. It would depend upon when it occurred. If it was RM and accomplished in the 50s he would be an ATG with the caveat being he didn't have to fight any tough bros (only old ones who still gave him hell) so under careful scrutiny he was likely overrated.

If Joe had been American he would have already been forced to step up in the mid-90s and would quite likely have been given several losses and possibly had his career ruined (because he wouldn't have been allowed to duck all the tough bros in this country). Joe would have been thrown into the fire and forced to sink or swim - not pick and choose opponents for the entirety of his career.

If he had managed to fight all available comp and remained undefeated he would be a HUGE MEGA STAR (Leonard/Hearns/Hagler/Jones). Our country is still approximately 2/3 "white" so a successful white boxer would receive adoration for such an accomplishment. But, this is also why at first glance no one over here takes it seriously and certainly not based upon lip service. "White" boxers in the US haven't done **** as long as boxing has been integrated in a country where they are the extreme numerical majority. As a kid, my dad would take me to watch the heavyweight Jerry Quarry (and his younger, much smaller brother Mike Quarry) fight. Pretty slim pickings in such an ample talent pool.

This situation has been repeated in more than just boxing. Everyone has their anecdotal experiences. When I was a ten (living in a lower middle class area) I learned to play basketball. The good players played on one large court and the rest used the surrounding half courts. I never got in the big game. Three months into the year we moved into a middle class neighborhood (entirely white) and I was immediately the best player in the whole school. Not all sports went that way of course (baseball was fairly equivalent between the two).

As it is, you can't find a thousand sport fans (unless their family has Welsh roots) that would know who the hell Joe is RIGHT NOW. He didn't impress versus Hopkins and if he doesn't raise his performance against Jones he will remain COMPLETELY unknown over here. No exaggeration or minimization of Joe - just an absolute fact.

I was among those thinking Lacy would railroad as he was a very impressive fighter despite the current detractors of Lacy. I was proven wrong and had a newfound respect for Calzaghe.

I agree with some of what you say and you must be crying out for a big white hope now that pavlik has hit the buffers.
However it was hopkins who made the calzaghe fight ugly, and this was the right tactic for hopkins freddie roach even said they would have a plan for calzaghe which involved reducing his space , well you dont get much closer than doing the tango around the ring together do you?
If you watch that fight watch Hopkins arms every time they got close hopkins was the one holding on.
Hopkins saw that calzaghe performs his best when he has distance to produce the jab and work off that, examples lacy, kessler
So you have to give some credit to hopkins for the right tactic and trying to steal the fight.
But you have to look at this both ways, why didnt the best americans come over and fight our fighters in the 90s ?
    Benn, Collins, eubank, Watson, calzaghe
There was a lot of talk from james toney especially about wanting to fight eubank and benn in one night but nothing was heared after.
and god bless gerald mcclellan for taking the big fight with benn its just unfortunate that it ended the way it did because that fight would go down as an all time great fight.
And lets not forget mcclellan hit bloody hard
There were big events ready to go over here, even jones calzaghe was mentioned etc
Perhaps its promoters that should take the blame and not the fighters, who knows.
But there are two sides to a story and as much as people over in the us demand our fighters come over to face their best in the us.
Why shouldnt we see the same over here?

Nah even the best American fighters have haters, Mayweather, RJJ, DeLa hoya, etc all have a strong group of people who hate them...

It just seems when a foreigner with an impressive record is out there, they ten to unite in their hate, strange.:nut

He's in ATG in my book...not because of his record...but because he always comes out big in fights that most people say he will lose, as well as throw people out of their comfort zone...EVERYONE he has faced never fights the way they want to when they fight B-Hop...NOT TO MENTION THE ****IN AGE THIS GUY IS FIGHTING AT!!!:yikes

and although he is boring to one who doesnt know what it takes to be a boxer...TRUE boxing fans understand what he's doing and enjoy his brillance...but yes...he is VERY boring...:-((

AND EVEN ME AS A "YANK" questions his record...not his ability...his record...imo most of his highlight fights were against blown up welterweights...

Naa man...you OBVIOUSLY arent from here...

there's a reason why most AMERICAN FIGHT FANS...call him Gayweather

and its because they dont question his abilities...but his LACK OF OPPOSITION!

same goes for Joe...they hate him because he's a paper champ...everyone hates on an undefeated fighter because they tend to usually walk cautiously towards who they face because they love the "O" so much...as opposed to the glory days of boxing when people didn't really care for having an "O" on their record but rather fighting the best...shuting the critics up...in Joe's case...he fights past prime legends and thinks that earns him some sort of accolades or somethin...

there are still plenty of people he should be facing...just to name 2, Froch and Dawson...beating this VERY talented and VERY young up and comers will shut up MANY critics...

i personally hate him because he lacks both natural boxing ability and a thread of serious opposition...the guy boxes like he's in a high school brawl...he demeans the science of boxing...if it wasnt for his workrate Calzaghe would suck ass

I would bet that the only Hopkins fight you have ever seen is the one against the sheep shagger

He already beat up and coming fighters who were apparently seen on here as the future, he beat kessler and Lacy
Dawson and Froch are not fit to lace up joes gloves, but he may indulge and wipe the two of them out before retiring.
He said only today that he will sit down after this RJJ fight and consider if he goes on.
That to me doesnt sound like retirement talk it sound like a guy determined to cement his name.
And dawson froch and co will wish he had retired.
