Apparantly they do, as we are still awaiting the mythical figure who will walk through Calzaghe's powderpuff slaps and demolish him. George may hypothetically hit hard, but he's not all that good, as his record atests. Hypothetically is the only way he would hit Bernard Hopkins. The reason Hopkins isn't fighting him is that a virtual unknown who lost to someone that David Haye knocked out in about 0.7 seconds isn't in any way on his radar.
I don't see your point. His resume is weak. Winning 45 fights is an impressive number, but it is not that impressive when you take into account the general standard of opposition. Hence the reason why he will never be ranked among the very best fighters in history. And it's too late to do anything about that now. 9 years from 1997 till 2006 fighting mediocre opposition sealed that fact. Joe made his own bed by beating up guys he had never heard of in the Cardiff Ice Skating Rink for the best part of a decade. And he will lie it in for eternity.
The Yanks boasted about Pavlik until he was taught a lesson by Hopkins but who has Pavlik beat other than a vastly over-rated Taylor? Its a ****ing joke!
Following boxrec.com? Point out the holes in his record if you would. He only has ONE legit loss. That was to Godfrey at Cruiser. He didn't lose to the 6'5 1/2" Gurov (also at cruiser) in Russia. He got robbed. We are talking George at LHW not cruiser. Pretty big diff in size. Undoubtedly, if you had the opportunity to speak to either Haye or Hopkins about S. George they would offer you a different assessment of his relative abilities.
Funny then how you have greats like sugar ray leonard saying joe calzaghe will be remebered as an all time great boxer, and described calzaghes destruction of lacy as possible the finest display he has ever seen Im not going to argue with sugar ray are you? Also I think FRank warren must burden most of the blame for the fact some big fights fell through and some that frank just didnt fancy, I think warren just wanted to keep the cash rolling in and keep joe winning early on in his career after he won the belt from eubank, that I think will be a regret calzaghe may have in retirement. But he cant now go back your right there, but what he can do is beat who is in front of him and there has been no better person than that has there? Whether it be a scrappy fight, getting up off the canvas to win or the masterclass he showed, no one can deny that joe calzaghe always finds a way to work out how to win a fight. I think he will do the same saturday night and then possible after a rematch in cardiff he will take on one of the next americans on the radar or maybe hopkins in the uk to finish his career.
I'm not going to argue with SRL, but I'm not going to automatically agree with him either. I form my own opinions. The fight against Jones is an absolute sham. Calzaghe will win by stoppage of course, but there will be not one shred of glory or honour in it to any knowledgable and objective boxing fan, either American or British.
I haven't seen, nor claimed to have seen, the George v Gurov. I'll take your word for it that it was a robbery as you have seen it. I see he lost, and was knocked down. I saw the Byrd fight where Byrd looked a shadow of himself, so hard to draw conclusions. Aside from that, and being ko'd by Godfrey, he's fought no-one. His next opponent hasn't won in 8. This is not a legitimate opponent for someone like Bernard Hopkins.
I agree that Joe C will beat jones but I dont agree its a sham I wish it had happened years ago but its better late than never I look forward to the fight and I think it will be far better than hopkins calzaghe.
Jones, like Calzaghe said in his autobiography 'No Ordinary Joe' written in 2007, was SHOT back in 2004-5 when he was being dominated by Tarver and Johnson. The fight is a complete money-making sham IMO, designed to fool naive fans and make some candy. It has no legitimacy. Jones hasn't beaten a world top 10 ranked fighter in 4 years. It didn't happen years ago because Calzaghe knew Jones would wipe the floor with him. It will indeed be more exciting for Calzaghe fans than Calzaghe v Hopkins, because this time Calzaghe won't find every single attack being nullified by a more skilled opponent, and nor will he find himself knocked off his feet. It will be more exciting for his fans because it will be a mid-round stoppage after a dominant performance.
This whole Jones was so good in the 90s he could walk on water thing is silly. Im not convinced Jones would have beaten Calzaghe and for that matter neither am i convinced whether he would have beaten a prime benn or eubank because if they connected with roys chin goodnight! Both could bang As for calzaghe I think calzaghe would have found a way of getting to roy even in the 90s Now im not saying joe would definately have beaten roy all I am saying is im not as convinced as most on here that roy would destroy joe calzaghe. I dont think anyone would destroy calzaghe they may have beaten him but not destroyed him his chin is so good.
One thing you we should point out is it comes down to attitude, sometimes even more than what nationality a fighter is which I think is unfair. Joe is very cocky (same with Mayweather for example) and that rubs some fans off the wrong way. So some fans (mostly people that hate his cocky persona) look for anything negative to say about the fighter and at times nitpick on the resume. Floyd I think has a great resume (mostly 130) yet he still get criticized off his record. A guy like Klistschko who is a peoples champ does not get critcized as aggressivly for his resume as a guy like Calzaghe does, yet calzaghe in my view has the better resume. However Klistschko has the better attitude so some fans (not all) simply ignore that and put resumes and accomplishments aside. Just something to think about.
Its a good point, but calzaghe may come accross as confident and cocky but the guy is great. He has done so many interviews in wales before he went out and also the interviews he has done for setanta sports have all been good ones, he come accross as relaxed, humble and enjoying life. Comparing Joe C to Mayweather in the cockiness stakes just doesnt work, mayweather is THE most cocky fighter possibly there has ever been, counting money in your face coming in dressed as a roman general laughing and goading people at press conferences etc So while I do see Calzaghe being confident and whether that comes accross as cocky i dont know, but he is a very nice guy and a student of boxing he knows a hell of a lot about the sport.
