If Jack Dempsey had not taken a 3 year lapse in fighting, could he have beaten Tunney?

I watched a vid where Tyson`s former mentor D`Amato was telling Ali that Marciano would have given Ali a far tougher fight than Dempsey and the reason he gave was something you can clearly see in the Tunney fight, Dempsey fought from a crouch, rolling under shots very well, but as he croughed to get low he brought his head forwards to bring it down, the problem is that his head was then brought nearer to Tunney`s lead hand meaning Gene`s jab didn`t have to travel far to land on Jack, the shorrter the distance that a punch travels the less time you have to react to it, which is why Dempsey was outjabbed by Tunney and why Cus stated that he would be outjabbed by Ali, who had a longer reach than Gene and just about any heavyweight with a good jab, like Holmes who`s reach was longer than Ali`s and Tunney`s. Was D`Amato right or wrong?

I think Dempsey, because of his mobility, would have been more difficult than Marciano for Ali.

I think Dempsey would have been harder for Ali to tag with his punches,he was quicker and more elusive. An old Louis had no problem connecting with his jab against Rocky ,I very much doubt he would have had that success with Dempsey. If Dempsey had not taken 3 years off I think he would have beaten Tunney, but stylistically the Marine would always be a hard fight, imo.
Good question, which you seem to have a habit of asking!

I feel Charles and Walcot would have landed more jabs on Dempsey than Marciano because Dempsey`s head was dipped forwards bringing it nearer to the opponents lead hand this would have been a huge mistake against master boxers like Walcot and Charles, notice how Marciano leans down to his right off center out of the path of the jab as he comes in and has his rear glove in front of the left side of his chin to block the jab too.

I think common sense dictates that Prime Dempsey(1919) is faster a foot, hand speed, basically everything … This Dempsey knocks out Tunney every time , imo

Thing is, if he hadn't been inactive, he might have been shop worn.

Supposodly he injured his hip fighting Firpo, he mentioned it effecting him much later on, so I have to imagine it played a role in his lower mobility against Tunney.

As for in his prime, yeah I'd pick Dempsey over Tunney, I think Ali was too big and too good though. I think Ali would be a nightmare for Rocky too, but Rocky's relentlessness, would probably get him some success late.

Tunney was harder to hit with jabs and had better footwork than Jack.

Dempsey tore his anus open when he landed on that typewriter,it created a fissure that required surgery later.

Yes it was a poor response on my part … didn't mean it that way .. I was referring to the pressure fighting which I like prime JD to beat Tunney
