If Jack Dempsey had not taken a 3 year lapse in fighting, could he have beaten Tunney?

Some say Greb was better than Dempsey P4P though, I wouldn`t know I wasn`t there.

I don`t know if this is relevant, but back in 1990 as a kid I dodged sparring at my local boxing gym because I was shy, the trainer looked over at me as I was punching the heavybag and said to one of the other kids that sparred: 'At least you got arsehole!'

Good point, I`ll have to have a look at that, Joe`s lead hand was always in line with his lead leg meaning as he jabbed it meant it was easier to land it and it didn`t have far to travel, I saw Jone using the same lead hand lead leg tactics vs Ruiz.

The first few times you spar, the other fella looks twice your size doesn't he?

It was of a bicep thing, I was very thin, I only to the gym because the guy that was living with my mum and us at te time, knew I liked boxing, reading the ring and watching Benn and Eubank on TV, so he knew the guy that ran the gym and told him I was interested, so I went because I didn`t want to look lie a wimp. One of te guys I sparred with was the cousin of an Irish kid that attacked me in the street the year before, that was another reason why I felt uneasy, and then when I did spar, the gloves were really old and the padding didn`t provid as much protection, so I only went a few times. Outside the gym some guy was going to attack me or something, he was being egged on by his mates to do something, but as he walked towards me, Sam, my mum`s partner came by to pick me up, maybe he knew I wa nervous, but the next few sessions I felt better and walked home by myself and nothing happened, I really didn`t like it though. I went back some time in the noughties just to train on the heavybag a bit because I was suffering from a bit of depression, by that time Steward had bought the gym, because it had been fixed up and was called a Kronk gym, Danny Williams who beat Mike Tyson was punching the pads while I was there.

I think Dempsey would've won. If a past prime and out of shape Dempsey gave Tunney a run for his money, then I'm sure a prime Dempsey would probably win by a mid to late round ko, though Tunney would still put up a hell of a fight.

Apart from the KD in their second fight Dempsey wasn't really in either fight.

I think Dempsey is greater at HW, but Tunney seems to have the style and plan along with the ability to always frustrate Dempsey at any point for my money. I view it like Holy Tyson or maybe Ali Norton. Some guys just present a bad matchup style

I think that's a pretty interesting point and comparison, and while I still hold my opinion that Dempsey would win, that does make me look at it from a new perspective.

Tunney in two fights won 19 out of 20 rounds against Dempsey and did so fairly easily. So he clearly has a stylistic edge against the man. So it comes down to how much was Jack diminished. I think based on film available it’s clear his legs are nothing like they are in the Willard Fight, the Tate sparring session and even the Firpo fight. His stamina is also reduced by time he faces Tunney.
For me - he proved he could hurt Tunney badly. A younger and fresher Jack with far more spring in his legs could conceivably get to and finish off Tunney.
I would make Jack a slight favorite strictly cause he seemed to be such a better athlete in his prime than the version that faced Tunney. But Tunney would not be easy.
