if he took 6 months he could probably make cw safely, but given that he'll make more money at hw (tho lose against most good real hw's), making such a move wouldn't make dollars and cents when he's too old to have a sustained run at CW. that said he could never be disciplined enough to lose the weight in the first place

I certainly agree theres a big "if" when you tlak about James Toney. The thing is..this guy is out of shape even at heavyweight. Imagine, a guy that is a formal middleweight/super middle that should have at maximum got to LHW and still can fight the top 15 fighters at heavyweight and be competitive.

Training and weight are Toney's achilles heel. In spite of all of that the guy is a master boxer, great chin and defense and fast hands.

man you really got it in for Toney..hes older yes..i dont know about not being worth **** in years...he put the whammy on Peter in their first fight..and as far as the fallen hvywieght division is concerned hes not that far from the top...hell rahman is getting ANOTHER shot..i think toney would fare better, not much, but better

At this point Toneys ideal weight is 215 lbs. Anything below that would take too much toll on his body. Just look what losing weight so late in ones career did to Chris Byrd, or, more recently, to DLH. Whatever, I don't think Toney can get his weight below 220lbs anyways.

The question is, even IF Toney could make the CW or even LHW limit again while staying healthy, why should he do it? I'm asking this because todays HWs are so weak and unskilled that a far past his prime Toney can still compete with most of them (except for the Klitschkos) - I wouldn't be so certain about him being still competitive at the top of f.ex. the LHW division (but don't get me wrong, the Toney that actually fought at LHW, the 1995 version, would clean out todays LHW division). The HW division is very weak indeed, old past their prime fighters can still get title-shots (Rahman, Holyfield...), so there's some hope Toney could get another title-shot too...
