If James Toney had the discipline of Bernard Hopkins....

    Could he have been the greatest fighter of all time? lets say he systematically went and got belts at 160, 168, 175, and reigned his whole career, something he could have done pretty easily IMO. His only threat was Roy, but had they fought later in their careers and toney hadnt drained himself, things could have been different.

    greatest probably not but probably a top 15 atg

    toney is one of my all time favorites so i might be a little biased but the dude was just so awesome to watch.

    Bhop is great and he has a very effective style, but he is not as gifted as Toney IMO. Toney could do everything hopkins does, and he has more power and more activity.

    toney was great, but i think very good "stick and move" type fighters would always have given him trouble. the ultimate stick and mover (rjj) made him look like nothing.

    you know bernard would have looked alot like toney with his accuracy and timing had he not done all the illegal and dirty tactics.... but then he wouldn't have been bhops!

    most boxers would be much better with hopkins discipline. Toney would weigh alot less

    A focused James Toney is top 10 material. It's says alot that with all he did, he's still considered to have underachieved. The most natural fighter i've ever seen along with Roberto Duran.

    God no. Even at his very best he'd fall short against many top middleweights throughout history, credit to him for being able to move up in weight and have success at cruiser and a bit at heavy, but even if he had sustained crazy Hopkins-like discipline, he simply lacked the versatility to even be argued as a top 20 ATG, nevermind #1.

    James is a problem without a professional work ethic...with a pro work ethic James is damn near unbeatable. I honestly feel James is a waste of talent even though he's legitimately an ATG.:lol: Crazy to think about "WHAT IF's" when talking about what James could have accomplished on top of what he's done "half assin'" it the majority of his career.

    judah is struggling to do so.. he is doing ok...but i have a feeling even him will get overconfident and pay for it.

    I was pretty young and not following boxing as much when Toney was at his peak, so i don't know much. But seeing the Toney i know now, is soo hard to imagine the 'atg' Toney that you guys talk about..
