It's a valid point but thrying to paint Marciano's primary opposition as in their primes when he fought them is clearly not. Both Jeffries and Rocky were young men fighting old men.

Corbett and Fitz were all time greats. You can't say that of Walcott and Louis was a shot fighter by the time Rocky fought him. Moore certainly was an all time great. Back in jeffries day they fought lots of exhibitions that were in fact actual fights. No headgear and with small gloves. Most agree that many of Jeffs fights have yet to be discovered. There is some info that says he Koed Martin and other top contenders during these barnstorming tours. When you read accounts by other known all time greats such as Corbett, Fitz and Langford they all pay tribute to Jeffs greatness. Obviously we don't have lots of film footage to Judge Jeff so we must go mostly by eye witness accounts from the experts from that time period. All that I have read point to Jeff not only as a huge, strong highly athletic fighter but an all time great skillful fighter as well. I would be more inclined to pick Marciano if he were facing a Corbett or Fitzsimmons. In Jeffries Marciano would be facing a larger, probably stronger version of himself. I highly doubt Jeff would tire in a 15 round bout...the guy was trim and cut in his prime. Not many were in the condition of Jeffries when they walked into the ring.

Im not painting them anything. I'm reading crap where people are equating no 3 rated, dropped one fight ,[against the heavyweight champ ]in 14 years, Joe Louis with alcoholic, tubercular ,out of the ring for years Peter Jackson ,and 165lbs Choynski, and 2 years retired 39 years old Fitz with, 32 years old ,coming off 2 wins over top 10 rated guys,Ezzard Charles.

Then, Jeffries was a giant fighting light heavies and cruisers.
Today he would be a small to average heavy. Alltime skillfull fighter ? He had his nose broken 3 times at least, came out of several fights with his face like a raw hamburger, he finished up with a cauliflower ear and a face like a gargoyle!

So, you think the Joe Louis who fought Marciano was anything close to prime?

Jackson is one of a very elite group, who could be considered as the greatest fighter of all time when they fought. Louis was another. That is not really arguable. And both were shot by the time they fought and lost to another all time great. That is a pretty similar win. Much like the Dempsey Tunney beat, the Ali Holmes beat or the Tyson that Lewis beat it is a win over a name fighter who has aged, and not really a win over that fighter. How you cant see that is beyond me.

Their opponents are similar, not identical.

You mean the Ezzartd Charles who was iced by a 37 year old Walcott, lost again to Joe in a fight where his performance was panned as flat and listless, lost to Harold Johnson, lost to Rex Layne and lost to Nino Valdez in the run up to the Marciano fight ? The again, why bother with the small details ... like the fact Marciano was an overwhelming favorite against this same Charles ... if this Charles was viewed as so terrific , why was Rocky such a huge favorite ? Can't just be because he beat up tiny LaStarza was it ? Your hatred of Jeffries in inverse proportion to your Johnson love is warping your view here ..

Where did I say Louis was close to prime?
I've already stated he was no longer The Brown Bomber, what he was, was a top 3 rated fighter, who had won his last 8 fights against fringe contenders lost the one previous to that, by dec to the reigning heavyweight champion , and won the previous 34 to that, he had one loss in the previous 15 years!

Joe Louis ,and Peter Jackson ,at those respective times in their career ,are similar in that, like an apple and an orange are both fruit ,they were both fighters.

Peter Jackson was an alcoholic wreck when he was wheeled out as a sacrifice to Jeffries, please stop with trying to make a valid comparison between him and the Joe Louis who faced Marciano. It not only insults my intelligence, it demeans yours.

You cannot deny written history. A fighter so widely and so completely considered an all time great does not become less than an all time great just because time has gone by. The idea that Rocky would beat Jeffries is a recent revisionist argument. I love Marciano but he has little chance against Jeff.

There was only about 20 years of Heavyweight Marquis de Queensbury history in the books when Jeffries fought. When you add another 40 years, and many hundreds more elite practitioners over that time, obviously the history does change. When an "all-time great" only means a "past 20 years great" it really isn't that significant.

What's to deny? A bunch of dinosaurs with their heads stuck so far up their ass they can see through their mouths when they babble the bull**** you have eaten up. Jeffries is automatically defined as "great" because he took on some of the best fighters of the era and beat them simple as that. However when you begin to to look at his record with abit more depth you'll find there's not much to be considered great. A guy who is in his physical prime fighting guys who are considerably older and smaller, with long layoffs and needing his face to be smashed to bits before he wins or going the full distance (25 rounds) again doesn't scream great to me.

Rocky Marciano isn't gonna go 25 rounds to a draw against a guy 60lbs+ lighter than he is, No way, No how.

Charles was 11-2 in his last 13 fights heading into the Marciano fight. His last 2 fights prior to Marciano I, he knocked out Ring Magazine top 10 heavyweight contenders bob satterfield and coley wallace. This moved Charles into the # 1 heavyweight contender spot in the world. He was clearly a legitimate challenger.

The Walcott IV loss, most had Charles winning. The Rex Layne loss was a dubious hometown decision, the harold Johnson fight I scored 6 rounds to 4 for Charles, the valdes loss was on the mark, but Valdes was the # 2 heavyweight contender in the world. Charles rebounded from those controversial losses with some impressive performances. His performance in the first marciano fight showed he clearly had a lot more left in the tank than many though, one of the most impressive of his career.

Regarding Marciano-Charles I, Nat Fleischer who sat ringside during the fight, said afterwards "that no fighter in the world could've lasted those 15 rounds against Charles, much less beat him."

What does 60lbs less than Marciano have to do with it? It isnt a pound for pound question is it?

Jim Corbett, is not without his chances against Marciano. In fact, in a 12 rounder he probably starts favourite, and in a 15 rounder or longer, who knows how he does. the assumption is that Corbett gets knocked out, but there are no guarantees.

If he ever fought Marciano, he would be the bigger fighter, the faster fighter and possibly even the fitter fighter. There is no guarantee that either Marciano or Jeffries could or would beat the other's opponents.

60lbs less has to do with the fact that Jeffries couldn't put out a significantly smaller man over the course of 25 rounds, even tho this man in question was put out by a significantly smaller man. I'm saying no person in history who is 60lbs lighter than Marciano is going 25 rounds with him, let alone to a draw see what I'm getting at?

Jim Corbett from the footage I've seen is adept enough to school most of the people from his era but would in turn get schooled by people in Marciano's era. Walcott, Charles hell even old Louis would turn his lights out. If Fitz could take out Corbett so could Rocky probably a hell of a lot quicker too. Whether you want to admit it or not boxing did infact evolve exponentially over the course of 50 years (as with basically every other sport), fighters were no longer keeping their hands by their waist, weren't lunging in to throw every punch, more active, knew to feint and counter etc. Corbett although the boxing master of his time would look foolish against the likes of Walcott and Charles. How Corbett could beat Rocky is beyond me but he does have a chance, much like air has a chance to turn into gold.

Jeffries style is all wrong for Marciano, all wrong. Take the opponent Jeffries had the most trouble with (Sharkey, who went close to 50 rounds with Jeffries) increase his skill, his defence, his workrate, his power and his chin and you basically got Marciano. If Jeffries could barely fork out a win against what's basically an old-obselete Marciano how would he fare against the more refined and more powerful version?
