When Jeffries won the title, he won it from a super middleweight.

And Johnson was KTFO by a supper middle weight who was not as good. What is your point?

Had there been big purses out there for Jeffries, he would have likely cleaned up on Hart, Burns, and Lang. Jeffries said he would fight Hart after Hart defeated Johnson in 1905 if the public wanted to see it.

There was also some talk 1908 or 1909 for Jeffries to come out of retirement to fight Lang.

Nahh, Marciano would have taking the title from him in 1952.

What are you rambling on about?

THIS THREAD HAS **** ALL TO DO WITH JACK JOHNSON SO STOP FOAMING AT THE MOUTH
Dont **** this thread up like you do every other.
THis is about Jeffries, at age 29 facing Ali's biggest punching opponents, [those I listed] ,from Frazier FOTC
for the next 6 years ,until he would be 35.

Please confine yourself to comments relevant to that.

In general, I'd probably give the Ali opponents a better chance vs. Jeffries if we stipulate they were just as they were in the 70's, than if it were a case of their coming along in Jeffries time and developing in analogy (but not exactly the same as) how they had developed in their proper time. I could be wrong to take this attitude, though.

One big question is how well Jeffries holds up, over a period of nearly seven years, against this crew. Would Jeffries have some serious milage -- and perhaps ring weariness -- when he met Frazier a third time? Would he have enough gas left in his tank, if Joe proved to be more than expected? Could Young have played spoiler? Would the years of accumulated punches had him ready to fall to Shavers?
It's just hard to say how a guy is going to be, seven years down the road.

The first encounters with Frazier, the encounter with Foreman, should be epic contests -- I'd favor Jeffries over Frazier 3-2 if Joe's coming along in Jeffries time, but if Joe's just as he was in '71, I think it's a toss up. Jeffries vs Foreman, hard to say if it's the Foreman Ali faced in '74, maybe by that point Jeffries is just starting on the other side of the hill, so I might favor Foreman something like 4-3; if Foreman's coming along in Jeffries time, I think that's a toss up.

I honestly don't think Jeffries is going to have near the problem with Lyle that Foreman did. Unless Jeffries reactions are starting to go, I don't think Lyle's getting to Jeffries chin near as often as he got to Foreman's. Jeffries was not an easy guy to get to in the vital spots.
