how long would he have held the title and who would he have won it from and who would he have lost it too. was he the great white hope of the 70s?
Jerry,,,,,,,,,,mismanaged badly. He should have by-passed Joe Frazier in 1968, and went right after a re-match with Jimmy Ellis in 1969.
Well if he managed to win the title in 1968-1969 he would have lost to Frazier, Ali, Foreman. He wouldn't hold it for more than 1 year without being forced or corned into a title fight. Even Patterson could have dethroned him.
Considering that he had already fought Patterson twice, and got the better of at least one of those matches, I don't know if a third fight would have occurred... And in all likelyhood, the later that such a bout a took place, the more it would be in Quarry's favor.
I believe Jerry would have dethroned Foreman if he'd gotten a shot before Ali. However, popular as he was, he would never have been seen as more than a transitional champion before Ali regained the title. Ali-JQ II was a pretty bad loss before a huge audience, and I don't see how he could be expected to somehow retain the championship in a third bout. Jerry's only windows of opportunity for becoming a champion were if he could have had a return with Ellis for the WBA version after whitewashing Mathis, or when Foreman held it.
quarry was an excelent fighter, as good as or beter than a lot of champions skill and talent wise. There are always fighters around good enough to be a champion that lack one or a combination of subtle elements that always let them down. quarry was one of those fighters. Good enough to be a champion but doomed never to be one.
Quarry would have beat the **** out of Henry Cooper. He was just a better all around fighter and tougher to boot.
quarry fought in america that is the only difference. both good fighters, henry actualy did beter against brian london than quarry did. Had they met in 68-70 quarry would win because cooper was old but cooper of 1960-63 v the best quarry its prety close. beating the ****? thats going way too far.
How do you figure Henry did better than Quarry against London? They both had early KOs over him when he wasnt in his prime and both had fairly lopsided decisions against him when he was still a contender. Quarry was criticized for his performance against London in the first fight but that was because expectations of him were so high. He still won handily and when they had their rematch he turned in a Jack Bodell style KO. He did much better against Patterson than Cooper ever dreamed of when he was lying unconcious on the canvas after Patterson destroyed him and short of Coopers knockdown of Ali they both lost in pretty similar fashion to him. I just think Quarry was a physically bigger, stronger guy, with a harder punch, and was definately more durable. I think he would give Cooper all kinds of problems because Cooper does better with boxers than sluggers, when he can take his time. Quarry was better when he was counter punching but had the temperment of a slugger and when he got on somebodys ass, especially somebody who didnt have a terrific chin or strong skin, something was going to give. I dont think that something is Quarry. You could even argue that Quarry cut as well but he didnt start busting apart at the seems until he was past his prime. I could see Cooper scoring a flash knockdown and that would be the end of his success. Quarry would get up embarrassed and looking to gain back his momentum hed be mad as a hornet and Cooper would end up getting KOd clean or cut to shreds. Either way, the pressure would be too much for him and hed end up getting stopped.
If Jerry Quarry got a re-match with Jimmy Ellis in early-1969, and won the WBA Championship,,,,,,,,,,,first up Sonny Liston in California, a nice late-Summer bout Now that would have been a great fight,,,,,,,, Not a long run though,,,,
well I am glad you back traked on the "beat the **** out of cooper" crap. I would give quarry the edge but it is prety even. I dont think quarry hit any harder than cooper did, they could both KO rated fighters and that is plenty hard enough. quarrys defence was quite leaky, chuvalo Kod quarry with a left hook and there is no way he hit like cooper. even at the end of his career cooper was never in trouble against the likes of a joe alexander type who nearly beat quarry. cooper gets a bum deal on this forum. Aside from zora folley here is a list of ring magazine top ten rated contenders cooper beat. dick richardson (euro champ, beat ezzard charles and bob baker) joe bygraves (comonwealth champ) brian london (beat pastrano, radmacher, roger rischer and zora foley) joe erskine (beat chuvalo & pastrano) alex miteff (beat nino valdes) roy harris (world title chalenger) wayne bethea (beat ezzard charles & ernie terrel) karl mildenburger (world title chalenger & euro champ) hubert hilton (rated in top ten 1966) jose urtain (beat 4 euro champions, ring magazine fighter of the month) *heinz neuhaus (draw in germany) heinz was a euro champ who beat rex layne and dan bucceroni Quarry had great wins too, this is a list of his best wins against rated fighters who were still good when he beat them...Obviously younger fans will be more familiar with these contenders and who they beat. Brian London Floyd patterson Thad spencer Buster mathis Mac foster Ron lyle Ernie shavers Jack bodell Larry middleton Lorenzo zannon.
No matter, for a World Title or not,,,,,,,, Jerry Quarry versus Henry Cooper should have been made. 1968 looks like the year.
