Brinkley isn't a young man, he's 33. If he was going to go the route you suggest, he wouldn't have bothered fighting Stevens in the first place. A fight with Bute is not only a title shot but a big payday by his standards and in all likelihood he doesn't have much career left ahead of him regardless.

And you are correct in that Bute will most likely destroy him, though probably not in the manner you describe. Brinkley has a pretty good chin, but is weak against body punching(hurt badly by Alfonso Gomez from a liver shot, stopped by Joey Spina in a fight Brinkley was dominating), something Stevens should have been doing and that Bute is pretty good at as Andrade can attest to.

its the man's own life, if he earned a shot at the title and wants to take it let him have it.

Yeah, after all those losses to Mora, Gomez, Spina and Reid, Brinkley has improved and beaten some average guys in very dominating performances most of the times.
The only guy who deserves more a title shot than him in the SMW division is only arguably Sakio Bika.

He's more deserving than a lot of past mandatories have been, so I don't have a problem with him getting a shot. He will be obliterated, though, but that'll happen with most fighters against Bute.

Last night he did not beat an average guy.

Curtis is garbage. You hear me? Garbage.

But you're right. He's earned the chance to get his head knocked off.

I believe he is. He's going to get destroyed against Bute, but he deserves his shot. He won me over last night. Trading with Stevens until the final bell even though he had a VERY comfortable lead.

All I know is if I'm HBO and/or Top Rank and the Bute people walk into the meeting and say "Okay so we'll start the show off with Bute vs Brinkley in Montreal", I'm getting up and heading the **** home. No point in even negotiating at that point, just go home and plan the next Latin Fury event. Brinkley isn't HBO caliber and that'll show through in a Bute fight. I wouldn't be shocked if a Bute vs Brinkley/Pavlik vs Martinez fight did brutal ratings wise.

Although I think Tays is right with the whole bald, white guy thing. I can hear Lampley now:

Lampley- Brinkley is a tough guy who poses a threat extremely similar to Kelly Pavlik.

Merchant- Yeah...if you tilt your head, close one eye and have a few of what I'm drinking, they're practically the same ****ing guy.

I have to agree with boo on this. Brinkley does deserve a shot, and i deserve a shot at being the president. That doesn't mean it is viable.
Bute would seriously hurt brinkley. Hell, garbage spina stopped jesse to the body. What do you think the body banger in the 168 lb class will do to him. Bute is faster, stronger, hits harder, is more skilled. Sure jesse can make money fighting bute, but it will be his last fight if he does. his kid has NO chance, and bute gets nothing for stretching him. Fight probably
    won't happen.

I dont begrudge any fighter earning money, and if hes earned his opportunity fair play to him, but the fight dosent excite me at all. I cant make a case for Brinkley beating Bute at all.
I understand how Brinkley has had an eliminator to move up the rankings, but even with The Super six happening I can still see more worthy challengers in Bika, Gutknecht, Balzay or Miranda or even a unification match with WBA regular champ (I hate this WBA champ/super champ thing) Sartison although then you would end up with 2 WBA super champs and then you would have a vacant title fight for the WBA belt, giving 3 WBA SMW Champs (Only joking but it wouldnt surprise me though).

That was a very entertaining fight last night! he should get his shot. I think Brinkley is VERY STRONG. I dont think a lot of people understand how strong, he had his way last night, and if he can come at Bute and press him like the first time Andrade did he might have a shot down the stretch IF he's in unbelievable shape... I'd like to see it

Brinkley is a very likable fighter who beat the crap out of a guy who was supposed to stop him in 2 or 3 rounds. He just doubled his marketability. However, marketability and likability are not a replacement for durability.

Say what you will about Zuniga and Andrade, but the fact is, both are far more durable than Brinkley. Those two guys are about as close to un-knockout-able as fighters get. Bute stopped both in under 4 rounds.

Brinkley can make good money for another 2 or 3 years by fighting locally against guys from the bottom end of the top 20. He'd get one good pay day fighting Bute, and it might be his last.

I thought Brinkley would be gone in a couple of rounds, so last night was a nice surprise. That being said, neither of those Stevens or Brinkley belong at 168.

Stevens could probably make 154, and Brinkley was at 154 at one point, and looks like he could still hit 160 with some more effort.

Bute will destroy Brinkley. Everyone knows that. Instead of Bute, Brinkley should drop weight and look to fight guys like Duddy, Chavez Jr, Sylvester, perhaps a few others. He can win these fights, and they would still be high profile fights.

He will get smashed, but give him his pay day. He earned it.
