But 49-0 is a lot more impressive than 49-1.

Sorry, Tunney's run at heavyweight does little to convince me that a middling contender would still not be an exceptional risk.

To all three I would suggest that retirement is a forever thing (no comebacks, Jeff!) so be sure that one is happy with their position in boxing history.

Jim Jeffries - Look after your money......your main contenders are black men so do you want to fight them? If so, do it sooner rather than later with Jack Johnson who is getting better and better.

Gene Tunney - The Heavyweight field is fairly weak at the moment so you could fight on but you are with a wealthy lady and you have money yourself now so retire and be happy.

Rocky Marciano - Your last few fights have been tough ones, retire and enjoy the money as the fights will only get tougher as you get older.

Quite a few would say it should be 48-0-1 as many gave the first Lowry fight to Lowry, some thought Rocky lost the first Lastarza fight too.

Every fighter's record can be questioned. Many people think that Ali lost to Jones, Frazier twice, Norton twice, Jimmy Young, possibly Shavers and the two fights with a past prime Liston were fixed. So? Ditto Louis vs Walcott 1 and Ellis vs Patterson and on and on. The records, though, are what they are.

I think Jeffries would have to be heavily favoured to beat Johnson in 04, 05. I think it's worth the risk, personally.

I always thought that Johnson would have been right not to take the fight in the cellar (assuming that it happened), because of Jeffries wrestling background. He even took an interest in jujitsu at one point. Even so, Frazier was a tough customer, and anything can happen in a no holds barred fight.

    He does have another option.

He could have waited until Hart beat Johnson, and then he could have fought Hart.

Even that would have enhanced his legacy significantly.
