How would he go about beating a prime Toney at 168? I am interested. I take your analysis very seriously, no matter how much I question it, but I'd like to hear this one.

Against a mover like Jones, and to a lesser extent, Calzaghe, I feel Toney is too stationary. But against a straight forward pure boxer who stays in range, I feel Toney(at his best) was too slick, and being that Kessler would have to move in to land the cleaner blows, I feel he would allow himself to be countered a lot.

I think speed and movement is the key to beating a prime Toney. I don't see what Kessler brings.

Calzaghe would win. Toney's counterpunching skills are good against normal fighters and big punchers. Against a speed demon like Calzaghe who throws 10 - 15 punches at a time and never tires, counterpunching is deadly. A counterpunchig style is based on the fact that practically every fighter stops throwing after 1 - 3 punches, a 5 punch combo is already rare. Joe throws more and faster than anybody except RJJ at 168 - 175. While RJJ may have a slight edge in top speed, Joe makes up for that with his workrate and relentlessness. When RJJ fought Toney, he was content to cruise to victory, Joe doesn't do that in a big fight. Toney could never dictate the pace against Calzaghe and would be systematically broken down. While he was a great fighter, he was not the best at adjusting when things didn't go his way.

RJJ toyed with Toney because he was so much faster than him...even Montell Griffin was fast enough to box circles around him twice. Calzaghe would do the same.

Toney kept moving up to higher and higher weight classes because he couldn't deal with the speed. Toney relies on fighters laying on the inside with him so that he can bust them up from close range. Joe will never give him the opportunity. He would turn him all around and give him a beating from the outside.

Calzaghe is taller, has a longer reach, and is faster than Phoney...I mean Toney!

  4. TRU TRUE AND TRUE:thumbsup AND JC is also better conditioned and had better stamina, JC had the discipline and work ethic to stay ay 168 as he aged because he keeps in shape, unlike Toney a lazy fat ass who balloned in weight because of Sloth and his desire to go to Burger King instead of the gym..

Toney has the perfect style to beat Calzaghe, he would be sneaky with the counter and never let Calzaghe establish a rhythm. Calzaghe isn't hard to counter, when he swarms all over you throw lots of punches just sit tight, dont panic and counter with well-picked right hands. Kessler had great success with that, and Joe had to change tactics to win the fight. He had to resort to nipping in and out, potshotting, to win the UD. James Toney is the very best of that old school, in-the-pocket counteing and would have no trouble with Calzaghe's style.

He goes alongside Roy Jones and Herol Graham as the only people with the right style to be able to beat Calzaghe.

Don't expect Amsterdam to answer that. He loves to say who would win, but the how's and why's never come up.

Toney by UD. Joe is not as fast as RJJ and Joe doesnt not have as quick of a first step as RJJ meaning altogether that Joe is not as anywhere near as elusive as RJJ. My point is that this fight would be Calzaghe hitting elbows and shoulders and JT catching him with hooks and overhand rights. I do think there would be damage on Calzaghes face and i also think he could possibly dropped in a round but I think he would continue till the end. JT is by far better than anyone he has ever fought and out of his league so I think it would probably be one-sided to a certain extent although not total domination by any extent.

But at the same time, you can't continue to punch if you get caught with a good counterpunch.

He got caught by one at 3.54 in that film and you could see he was in trouble from it too. So much for the iron chin....if Kessler was half as good as the Calzaghe fans are claiming then he would have followed that up. Had that been Jones or Toney Joe would have been in deep **** at that point.

Nunn was boxing Toney's ears off before getting stopped. Probably Calzaghe. Would that fight be at 168? If not Calzaghe would be too drained and Nunn would win.
