If Joe Calzaghe had lost a fight, would you still consider him an ATG?

are you serious??? Mosley beat De La Hoya, Margarito, Mayorga, Vargas and Collazo since 2000.

Hopkins beat an unbeaten Glen Johnson who was not a smaller man. Tarver and Pascal were not smaller fighters. He was a pretty big underdog against the unbeaten Trinidad even though you could say he was smaller.

    You seem extremely biased.

Name me one great fighter Calzaghe fought in their prime. Just one.

I know Calzaghe may have tried to unify. Maybe it was their fault, maybe it was his. But again, who knows why fights don't get made. You don't get extra points for trying to make fights. Fact is, there were other champs with better belts and opportunities to fight them for 9 years before he did.
Which makes Woodhall a pretty good fighter.

Possibly more accomplished, because they have the last 5 years to show for. Were they more accomplished back in 05? Give the current crop 5 years to make their case too. Which is more talented? Where are the better fights to be made?

Also, 2005 is toward the end of JC's reign at smw. The criticism really stems from the relative lack of quality opposition in his resume during his wbo reign.
2 out of his 3 best opponents come from that 2005 list.

This idea that had Calzaghe been American, he would have been a beloved figure is untrue. He would have been shredded for doing nothing than defend a fringe belt, in a division with no prestige, against weak opposition.

He was a #1 wbo contender, nothing more. Was he ranked at all anywhere else? Based on what.... made him a quality opponent? Regional titles mean little. Did he pose ANY threat to Calzaghe at all?

Which makes him an ok opponent.

That's about the only time he may have been able not to consider the UK a home fight. If a foreign fighter is coming into the UK, Wales or otherwise, it's a home fight.

All the guys I mentioned were reasonable and would have been better opponents and a bigger threat, coming off losses or not. Manfredo was a gimme, but at least it was up front.

Alot of guys campaigning at smw today can thank JC for bringing the division some of the legitimacy and prestige it lacked.

He beat Kessler and Lacy when both were challenging for the top of the division. I said earlier there wasn't alot to quibble with after Lacy. But before that, he did not beat the best smw's. Again, 50% gimmes during a 9 year reign as a title holder does not jive with beating the best. 5 or 6 world class ranked fighters is not beating the best either.

Yes, he did it about 6 or 7 years too late IMO. But the path of least resistance certainly seems the path well traveled between 97 and 06.

Mosley's wins over De La Hoya dwarf anything Joe did. He has a better resume by leaps and bounds. Hopkins did indeed beat smaller guys, but they were undoubtedly world class operators. They were also serious challenges.

Again, 6 or 7 years too late. And not just because Hopkins was old and Jones was shot. There were much tougher, challenging fights to be had at lhw. It would have done more for his legacy, and/or given a better indicator of his ability at the world level than fighting those guys during his wbo reign.

Tarver would have been a stiff challenge. Far more so than any of the guys he fought at smw. Jones(pre HW), Michalzewski, Johnson, etc...... would have been serious threats to the "0".

Calzaghe is considered an ATG? Based on what, exactly?

****ing joke of a career, most protected fighter in history and most definately NOT an ATG.
