If Joe Cortez was the ref, Andre Ward would beat Prime Ali

I know the first reaction would be "of course he could" but take a second look.

Ali weighed around 200lb's, Ward probably rehydrates to 180 or so and could make 190+ fairly easily.

Ward is only an inch or so shorter than Ali.

I also think the evolution of skill that we have seen in recent years would make this very tough for Ali, I mean he got lucky against Frazier because he was allowed to use illegal head pulling tactics to break Fraziers in-fighting.

Ali was obviously not an inside fighter, and also struggled when he was made to lead in fights, which a modern, smart fighter like Ward would use to his advantage

I think If Joe Cortez was reffing, Ward would beat Ali 116-112

Shut the **** up. ward's punches would gain absolutely no respect from Ali. He wouldn't beat Ali from the outside and if he comes to the inside Ali will overpower him with the clinch. Ali outboxes him from the outside and stops him mid rounds.

Ali weighed 213 or so pounds in his prime. Ward would be out of his weight class.

    Are you kidding me?

Ali was featherfisted, only 60% ko ratio against guys on average 200lbs. The guy is no Klitschko

I could see it if you thought Ali won a decision, but KO? over Ward who has an iron chin, never been stopped?

    Blatent historical romanticism

The problem is that Ali stopped and hurt men bigger and stronger then Andre Ward. While Ali didn't have great power, he could still stun and hurt fighters. Some of these guys include Foreman, Frazier, Liston, Bugner, Terrell, Lyle, and Bonavena, and those guys I consider much more durable then the likes of Ward. No disrespect to Ward, but Ali is in a much different class.

Ward has never really fought a full fledged heavyweight like Ali. Ali has stopped bigger guys then Ward.

No.. Ali stopped bigger guys then Ward. It's not that hard to believe. Ward would be fighting someone stronger, bigger, harder-hitting, faster, and someone that can take a shot better... Ward wouldn't hurt Ali at all.

You're absolutely right and the OP is talking nonsense.

We might, however, be able to salvage this thread and ask; could Ward eventually move up and take on a full-fledged Heavyweight of the modern era?

I think yes, he certainly has a large frame, and he could probably move up to 200 or 210 and from there his skill would actually get him pretty far. But a skilled big man like Haye or Povotkin would K.O. Him IMO
