He wouldn't have the reactions to pull the trigger. Patterson is also a very hard fighter to beat and he tends to get underrated by his losses.

Louis had nothing left for the Marciano bout, he's an old man in that ring operating with nothing more than a jab and a world of experience. He had trouble pulling the trigger on Marciano a come forward slugger. Louis never lasts another 5 years to fight Floyd. Hypothetically if he did -let's say we take the version that fought Marciano and replace Rocky with Floyd. Louis loses that fight too, however would have a puncher's chance with Floyd's chin. Slim chance.
Not only did Louis lose 4 years do to the war - he fought over 100 exhibition bouts in a time where they were close simulations to real bouts. Stuff that would never go down today. He was shopworn. He is a different fighter post ww2.

By that time he would be the same age as Holmes when he beat Mercer

I dont get it why some of you guys insist on comparing fighters age. We all age differently. Look at guys like O' Grady ..Mancini ect guys who lived clean and were impeccable condition and they were shot while still young men. This age comparing is flat out idiotic. I'm not saying your that I'm just saying it in general.

The more I think about it, Louis did age like ****. And not just in the ring, even when he died at age 66, he looked more like 86. George Foreman today at 71 easily looks healthier and better than Louis did at 61.

Louis was never going to age as well as Holmes.

He didn't have the style for it, and there is some evidence that he already had brain damage by the Walcott fight.

When Floyd Patterson beat Archie Moore for the title, was it not on Nov 30 1956?

Yeah , I was going by my arrogant, but faulty memory. The argument still holds, however. I almost looked it up before I wrote it, but I was lazy and it bit me in the ass.
