IF Johnson Had Rematched Willard 6 Months Later?

Even at his advanced age,Johnson had enough skill to have easily beaten Willard had he been in shape. Anger would have served as a good weapon too.

 

Depends on the duration of the fight. Willard fought a smart fight and took his time, using his size to slowly wear Johnson down. I dont think Johnson could beat Willard over another long bout.

 

Jack would have probably gone all out for a knockout in a rematch.

 

Johnson had had a soft schedule and underperformed after the Jeffries fight. Not sure he could have regained his previous form.

 

Johnson was 37 years old fighting 26 rounds out of 45. I think it is possible that he threw the fight. He went on to win another 17 in a row, 12 by KO. Crazy!

Why did they schedule 45 round anyway? Jack was not in his prime by the time he won the World title.

Johnson was motivated after that fight & wanted Dempsey too later. He only lostdue to exhaustion late in the fight. Why could he have not gotten back in very good shape with the motivation to win back his title?

No good reason he could not have & likely would knowing why he lost.

 

Johnson could not hurt Willard in the first fight, and it one of his better filmed efforts.

Best guess is Willard get the job done sooner if there was a re-match. Older heavyweights who can't punch hard seldom win re-matches vs younger fighters that can.

I would have liked to have seen Johnson face Wills, or Langford after this defeat. Was there any talk of these fights?

 

Though this still leaves unaddressed the fact that he was outboxing Willard for 20 rounds & lost due to conditioning. Add the motivation factor. He does not need to KO Willard either.

 

Johnson lost not only because of poor conditioning, but he lost a war of attrition to a much bigger, younger, and stronger man. He probably could have gotten up, like Tyson vs McBride, but realized that the situation was hopeless. It was over for Johnson as a champion under those rules of marathon fights.
