Jones is a top 10 ATG. Anybody who thinks otherwise doesn't know boxing and/or overrates the older fighters. It's funny, nobody is saying that Rod Laver or John Mc Enroe were better than Sampas and Federer, but in boxing everybody seems to think that fighters have gotten progressively worse over the years in spite of vastly improved nutrition, techology, knowledge/wisdom and experience gained from previous generations of fighters.
the bottom end of top 15 is where leonard, pernell whitaker and perhaps monzon lies....jones could be st par with them....even if he doesn't KO hopkins but beat him, you can still make a case for him to be in the top 15
Erm, anyone who thinks the 1993 version of Hopkins is better than the current version who beat Pavlik DOESNT HAVE A CLUE. The things that make Hopkins great, his ring craftyness etc...he never had then.
I don't think so. He still lost to Tarver and Johnson years ago. That would just mean that he was still ok when those guys exposed his chin.
stupid question .... if he couldn't do it back in his prime ... there is no way in hell he would be able to do it today
This is no disrespect to Jones, but he should stay the hell away from Hopkins. Bernard would tag this Roy Jones all night long, and virtually not get hit much himself. Hopkins can still bang when he has too, and you better believe he'd be looking for the knockout considering each fighters history. Roy has slim to none chance against Hopkins, who is still fighting better than ever.
At this stage of their carears, it does not affect my ranking of them either way. Had they rematched years ago, it would have been very revealing about who was better both H2H and during their respective era's legacy wise. At this point it would not prove a whole lot. RJJ (who seems shot) might get a little current booost or legitimacy as Hops has been a higher level fighter for the last 3 years...But as to their overall legacy, totally irrelevant. By the way why are you so infatuated with these mythacle P4P rankings that are totally subjective, to the extreme that even weight class rankings are difficult enough?
