If Jones would have retired after beating Ruiz...

Jones should have fought Chrissy Byrd after Ruiz - and he would have won. RJ would be the only Lt. Heavyweight to ever hold two belts at Heavyweight. This was a major mistake on RJ's part.

 

Not for nothing but I don't know anyone who was jokcing to see Jones vs Byrd not even Byrd's momma !!

 

I agree to an extent. My consensus is fighters should fight opponents boxing fans want to see. However RJ beating Byrd would have made history. This would have been one of the rare times I wouldn't mind seeing a lackluster fight.

Agreed. That could've been another good move for RJ. But as I said before RJ wasn't the best business man.

After RJ defeated Ruiz he should have stuck around to beat Chrissy Byrd to become the first Lt. Heavy to make history and hold two belts at heavyweight (Spinks held one title).

After defeating Byrd, RJ could have dropped down to Cruiser to fight several credible opponents while cleaning out that division.

When RJ beat Ruiz, Toney and Jirov were still the premier cruiserweights. RJ could have owned the bank and thrilled the fans with fighting either one of these two (Toney vs Jirov was the fight of the year in 03' and put the cruisers on the map), but RJ elected to go back to Lt. Heavy and fight Tarver.:huh

As much as I like RJ he was too cheap to hire a manager. Self-management was not RJ's forte. Not having the right management actually hurt RJ's profit making potential - and perhaps losing some fans in the process.

 

There was nothing at cruiserweight. Toney went to HW after the Jirov fight and Jirov moved up by the next year. Everyone left were guys no one would have paid to see RJJ fight.

 

Toney and Jirov were just getting started at heavy. Nobody took Toney seriously until two years into his heavyweight career. That two year gap was wasted time. Toney and Jirov's future at heavyweight was uncertain when both already made a solid foundation and good reputation for themselves at cruiser.

 

If Toney and Jirov were to have a rematch a year or two after their 03' fight of the year, RJ could have waited to fight the winner of the Toney - Jirov rematch which would have generated much interest for boxing fans and much revenue for the sport. What boxing fan in their right mind wouldn't want to see RJ vs Toney or RJ vs Jirov at cruiser?

 

I agree that they had no future at HW, but BOTH of them moved to that division. Can't blame RJ for that.

 

Please explain why Roy Jones, fresh off a historic HW victory, would wait for a Toney (who he already convincingly defeated) vs. Jirov rematch in a division with ZERO marquee value, especially when considering that he had options such as pursuing another HW belt (Byrd) or facing faded HW legends (Holyfield, Tyson, etc) for far more prestige AND perhaps 10 times the revenue?

RJ's big 'mistake' was letting Tarver's years of yapping finally get to him.
