If Kessler had won the 6, Joe C's res would've looked better. Does it now look worse?

Kessler was a very good smw champion before he fought Calzaghe, but he had never beaten any other real top class smw.

If he had won the Super Six, he would have proved that he was the undisputed number 1 supermiddleweight that many always believed he was.

This would surely have underlined the quality of Calzaghe's win over him.

But now that Kessler has been soundly beaten by a relatively inexperienced opponent in the first round, does it dilute or diminish Calzaghe's win?

Had Kessler ever really proven to be such a good fighter, or was he just another short-term alphabet champion who never had the quality of a division number one or pound-for-pound ranked fighter?

    Please vote and discuss :good

You are quite right I suppose, Kessler could still win it. I know I wouldn't back him to beat Ward in a rematch though.

Your legacy is shaped by the level of opposition that you bested....

before last night I had the Kessler Victory as Cazlaghe's most impressive victory, I considered Kessler an Elite world class fighter who was in his prime..

But Ward showed that Kessler is a good fighter who is very limited and easy to neutralize. Elite fighters do not lose to 25yr old unproven challengers, although Ward is a really good fighter... if Kessler was as good as the Calzaghe fans made him out to be he shouldn't have lost.

And don't give me this Calzaghe ruined him Bull****... Fighters don't get ruined in those types of fights, they get ruined after wars and being KO'd.. Kessler lost a close decision, while not 100%, to the worlds best SMW at the time.

the funny thing is that if Kessler wins the Tourney, Calzaghe nuthuggers will claim that Joe is even greater, and that he would have won the tournament no problem.... but now they will just get defensive and claim that it proves nothing

Yes, prime Kessler losing makes Cal's resume take a big hit.

You ****ing KNOW IT, my friend. I've made comments to this effect before. Calzaghe fans are so desperate to prop up his shoddy legacy they will look for any angle they can get amongst these current fighters to have work favourably for calzaghe. All the threads of "Bernard beat Pavlik, that make his win over Bhop better!" Or "Roy Jones is still in his prime and beat Omar Sheika!!" That makes his victory over Jones even better!

It makes me laugh so much. I'd love to see Joe grow a pair and come back to fight the winner of this tourney.

what part of the word retirement dont you understand?

is it deemed cowardly now if a fighter retires and stays retired?

This is ridiculous. Of course it doesn't. For one, it could be argued that Kessler wasn't the same fighter in the ring againsT Ward as he was against Calzaghe, and secondly, we have no idea how good Ward can be.

No, it's Joe's fault he didn't fight more legitimate, prime competition so he and his fans wouldn't have to stake so much on Mikkel Kessler's success in this tourney.

I can't get my head around why Kessler was considered such a badass to begin with. Knocking out a past it Beyer and shutting out Andrade was the best I could come up with. It seems as though he gained all this attention for dominating Andrade in a fight that saw neither guy make adjustments.

The real badass in this tournament is Arthur Abraham.

    No.

Beating 10 ex/present/future champions, having 20+ title defenses, being unbeaten in 45 fights and having three assured HOF'ers on his resume means Joe is pretty much immune to whatever happens to Kessler from this point on.

Kessler could still win the Super 6, if he does that, of course Joe gets benefits from it for having beaten him, but Joe's resume doesn't hinge on Kessler.
